First grade talent show cancelled, called "racist."

"A North Dakota elementary school will not be allowing the young men and women in a first-grade class to perform YMCA at a talent show because a parent dubbed the planned performance "racist."

Students at Bennett Elementary School in Fargo were supposed to sing the famous Village People song during a May talent show. The kids were supposed to come up dressed up like members of the '70s group - a policeman, a cowboy, a biker, a construction worker and a Native American."

Sounds like drama and stupidity on the level of the parents going to the press right away because their second grader supposedly had his Bible taken away. Some parents just like to showboat.

Agreed, drama queen mommy looking for a reason to be offended.
Of course, if it were my kid, I just wouldn't allow him or her to participate, and not because of the Indian costume but the real meaning of the song.

These days, I wouldn't want any kid of mine dressing up like a cop. (Didn't used to be like that.)

Having kids that age do anything in a "show" is all about the parents and little or nothing about the kids themselves. Parents wanting egos stroked "Oh, Johnny was so cute." In my day it was the stupid percussion bands. Fifty kids in paper hats wailing on drums, castanets and whatever else made noise along with a couple accordion players. I was six years old and embarrassed for everyone. If only someone had complained, the world would have been a better place. What a horrible sounding racket.

There used to be a guy "Big Al" in the theatre industry who was full-blooded Indian and had a crew that did screen and seat work. He would regularly come to conventions in extremely valuable full regalia and be proud of it. I miss seeing him around.

Oh, no, now we've lost Fargo too! Ladies and gentlemen, common sense has left the building.

If I were in charge, I would like to give the complainer the task to write, costume and direct a whole new act for the kids. They want to put the stops to what was planned and be hyper-sensitive, fine. Congratulations, you are now in charge of the replacement performance. Don't disappoint the kids!

If it wasn't lefties getting concerned about it being racist, it would have been right-wingers outraged by the school forcing the kids to promote the homosexual agenda.

THIS. It's not an appropriate song for children this age to sing.

Hmmm.

Innocent 1st graders wanted to dress in costumes and sing and dance to a popular, fun, yet meaningless (to them, anyway) song.

Their fun and learning - once again, ruined by parents.

I'm beginning to see a pattern here.

I must be oblivious, since that song had been out for nearly 20 years, before I realized it was not just a fun, popular disco song, but instead, a sinister attempt to promote the gay agenda. Heck we danced to it at my sisters wedding reception, acting out the letters Y-M-C-A with our hands.

The horror.

Maybe someone could point out to me what exactly is inappropriate in the lyrics? I am drawing a complete blank here.
Quote:
"Y.M.C.A."

Young man, there's no need to feel down.
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground.
I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy.

Young man, there's a place you can go.
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough.
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.

They have everything for you men to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.

You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal,
You can do whatever you feel...

Young man, are you listening to me?
I said, young man, what do you want to be?
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams.
But you got to know this one thing!

No man does it all by himself.
I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf,
And just go there, to the Y.M.C.A.
I'm sure they can help you today.

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.

They have everything for you men to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys...

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.

You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal,
You can do whatever you feel ...

Young man, I was once in your shoes.
I said, I was down and out with the blues.
I felt no man cared if I were alive.
I felt the whole world was so jive ...

That's when someone came up to me,
And said, young man, take a walk up the street.
There's a place there called the Y.M.C.A.
They can start you back on your way.

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.

They have everything for you men to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys...

Y.M.C.A....you'll find it at the Y.M.C.A.

Young man, young man, there's no need to feel down.
Young man, young man, get yourself off the ground.

Y.M.C.A....you'll find it at the Y.M.C.A.

Young man, young man, there's no need to feel down.
Young man, young man, get yourself off the ground.

Y.M.C.A....just go to the Y.M.C.A.

Young man, young man, are you listening to me?
Young man, young man, what do you wanna be?

Obviously referring to gay orgies.

ETA: That was intended as sarcasm, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was a real answer you might get.

The lyrics are designed for public consumption, however there is hidden meaning within a subgroup. That hidden meaning may or may not have been intentional.

Remember how "Puff the Magic Dragon" was taken as a pro-drug song, and "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" was supposedly about LSD? According to the writers of the songs, nothing could be further than the truth. That doesn't mean people will stop reading in such inferences.

YMCA can be seen as a reference to the gay bathhouse scene in New York City - most likely St. Marks Baths in the east village. The Village People are supposedly from "the village" in NYC, which along with the Bowery was a hot spot for gay activity and clubs in the 1970s.

The various costumes used in the skit can be interpreted as fetish wear.

The WMCA wasn't squeaky clean straight laced always either:

I doubt that singing YMCA is going to corrupt anyone any more than singing "Puff the Magic Dragon" is going to give kids flashbacks of Vietnam.

I was in high school when "YMCA" came out, and we all knew what it was really about.

I was in the Navy when "In the Navy" came out...let's just say that song didn't resonate with us...people attribute to it very similar undertones as "YMCA".

As a country, we are dumber than Dixie Chicks
People look for things to be offended by, and they find it, and they are teaching the kids to be offended for no good reason too.
It's the little things that keep hatred alive, and the kids are being taught by their parents (or one or two parents in a community) to hate, be offended and throw a fit

so i guess i am wondering if you are aiming this post at the people who thought the song was racist and wouldnt let their kids sing it. or the people here who think it has hidden meanings?
