These days I use a cpa. In the past I have done my own, not filed at all on the advise of an attorney, had a friend do it once... that wont happen again!

I just file for Homestead credit that is it. But I do have it done at a Tax Preparers office. No need to file income taxes when you don't make enough when on SS. LOL

I stayed with the same people for years also. Then the 3 ladies retired and sold their business to some out of state CPA's and boy did they raise their rates and never went back to them again. I am now using a tax office that i had done business with back in the 80's. And it is very inexpensive to just file Homestead Credit. Like 20 bucks. and i get hundreds back. So it sure is worth it to have a tax paperers to it.

Myself, at home, on the computer....... no problems, been doing it that way for years. When I was in the Marine Corps, they sent around a Captain and he asked if any of us filed our own taxes, like a fool I raised my hand, and away I went to "Tax Prep" course all the way down in Atlanta with a few other 'fools". Then for the two months after that we helped other Marines do their taxes.....
It was amazing to see single young Marines get all fidgety around a 1040EZ......

I use Turbotax to file for our personal and business taxes. I've been using it for years and it always works well. Once hubby retires, I may have a CPA do the taxes once, just to make sure that I don't miss anything special that applies to retirees.

We normally use a CPA but I decided to try Turbo Tax this year. One question. Are we still supposed to mail in our W-2's and 1099's to the IRS?
Thanks in advance.

Did you file electronically through Turbotax? If so, then you don't have to mail anything in.
Edited to add that the taxes are not finished until you choose to file electronically or opt to print them for mailing. Once you opt to file electronically, there are a few more steps (like signingthe form electronically and designating where you want your refund deposited/method of payment for taxes owed.

Yes ma'am, I did file electronically. Everything has been accepted by the IRS and is processing, just wasn't sure if they still wanted hard copies of W-2's. Thank you

I have someone do them professionally. If I did them, they would think that I had just become a fiction writer and need to check me out.

I use the free filing option through the IRS website. You can pick which preparer you want to use, I pick Turbo Tax, and it walks you through the whole process. Easy as pie. It is FREE as long as your income is under $58,000.
State return is done through the State's own Department of Revenue website, also FREE. You register, as with the above free file Turbo Tax, and it carries your info forward each year.
Go to the IRS website and look for the link for "Free File". It will take you from their site to a list of preparers, and you can pick one to use. Also, your state return can be done on TT, some are free, and a few are not. It will tell you before you start the State return. I do not have a way to pay it, no credit card, so I use the State of Alabama's website.
Have been doing this for several years. Print off everything and keep it for your files. The return is electronically sent, and TT will send you an email when the IRS accepts it.

I always use a local economical accountant. With farming, rules are constantly changing, and trying to keep abreast is pretty much impossible. It is also good to have outside advice in certain situations, to avoid costly mistakes.
Capital cost allowance is one example where things can be dicey, because different types of machinery fit in several different categories. One small slip can mean a huge tax bill, or a visit from Revenue Canada. Inventory adjustments, and many other issues arise, which complicate things immensely, I would rather not take that chance.
If I just had a regular job, I would file myself, I like that kind of thing, and personal taxes are very simple relative to farm income taxes. But having an actual accountant is the first line of defense from being audited, because they do things on the up and up, and are consistent.
The 250 bucks I pay to get my taxes done PROPERLY, is worth every cent. If I made a mistake, or got audited with no backup from him, it could cost many thousands of dollars very easily.

Homestead Credit because I rent. In WI even Home Owners can file Homestead Credit if they have a low enough income.
I remember but in the late 70's when I rented a house out to college students They would file homestead credit, and I would have to sign their paperwork, just like my landlord does for me now. LOL

I do my own with a pencil, calculator and forms downloaded from IRS website. Many years ago we used H&R Blockheads, but two years they made errors and the third year they lost my paperwork. I decided I could make my own mistakes and save money so that's what I've done since 1973 or so. Last year I had to file an amended return and wasn't sure about it so after I'd prepared everything I took it to a local lawyer's office that does taxes for review. It was correct. I mail my returns.

Same CPA for 25 years for me. That was the only way to go owning a business. Since I recently sold the business...I'll probably do it myself or take a hiatus.
