Does this ad attempt to show that it's all the speeders fault? He was speeding on an empty country road at 60 mph, which isn't all *that* over the speed limit.

Yes, mistakes can be made, but the man states that he "thought he had time", which shows he saw the car and was... intending to cut him off?

I know it's a "mistake", but holy smokes, that's a pretty big mistake. As a parent, I try to be aware so that I don't make little "mistakes" like that.

I've always said everyone should be made to ride a motorcycle for a year before they can drive a car.. It would give them a lot of appreciation for both sides of the argument of this..

The speed limit on those urban fringe 2 lane roads in NZ is 70 klicks (43.5 miles) and the fast driver was going 109 klicks (68 mph) so he was doing 39 klicks or just under 25 miles over the speed limit.

Both drivers were at fault though. The one for going too fast and the other for not waiting stopped at the stop sign until the speeding driver who had right of way on the throughway had gone past him.

It's a good public service announcement.

I completely agree with you.

However, if the speeder had been going the speed limit, he still wouldn't have been able to stop on time. That's how bad the father goofed up...

I saw no indication that the ad was "leaning" one way or the other,

in regards to a greater degree of fault being assigned. Rather, BOTH

parties admitted their small but contributing fault leading up to the ensuing accident,

that BOTH knew intuitively was still going to happen. They were unfortunately, but actors

in a bad play which must still go on, yet of which BOTH knew, neither change the outcome.

Once they returned to their respective vehicles, time (now stopped) would have to resume.


There are no 'winners' in an auto fatality no matter who made the mistake that caused it.

About the only thing that I'll speed up for is a cat. Maybe that's what these drivers were doing? We can never assume they were speeding for no good reason.

Nitpicking I know, but the speed limit on country roads is 100kph so he was doing 9k over the limit.
The urban fringe roads can be 70 or 80k (passing schools and school buses is 20kph).

Thanks for the correction. I guess NZ is more densely populated with more spread out infrastructure than I realized. I didn't think it was a country road. I thought it was urban fringe rather than an empty country road because of the fences, agricultural land, buildings and other infrastructure shown which would equate to urban fringe farmland where I live. Here a country road is a road going through unoccupied, undeveloped territory.
