Environmentalist pleads guilty to poaching.

An environmental activist who pled guilty this month to poaching elk during a November hunting trip will resign his position as the Idaho director of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition.
Marv Hoyt, a leading critic of mining activities on the health of sheep and cattle, killed three elk and left the carcasses of two behind to rot in the field.
Hoyt had only one tag for one elk, and initially denied to fish and game officers he had killed the other two cows and tried to hide the carcasses with tree branches. Although the protection of elk is a central goal of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition (GYC), Hoyt will not be fired from his position.

During this incident, Hoyt also confessed to illegally killing another elk in 2001.

I would plead the "freeman" defense once it gets to court.

Sure he can. There's a guy in MT that will show him how. Maybe if he throws in a new fishing pole he'll even drive on down and represent him.

I would buy the "freeman" excuse if he needed the elk for food but according to the artile he left them to rot in the field.

I hope he loses his license at the very least.

ETA, he did. Good. People like that don't need to hunt.

If he would've claimed his freeman status, he wouldn't have had a license to lose. Colorado just legalized pot cultivation. Maybe those cows he left were preparing the soil for next years crop. This guy needs to fully embrace his freemanity!

This happened in Idaho.

Quote:
Idaho Department of Fish and Game officials said Hoyt killed three elk and left the meat of two to waste in a field. He had only one valid elk tag when the incident took place Nov. 2 and lied about taking the other two animals, Fish and Game officers said.
Killed 3 elk but only had 1 tag.

Quote:
Hoyt pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors — unlawful taking of game and wasteful destruction of wildlife. Last month, 6th District Magistrate Judge David Evans sentenced Hoyt to 30 days in jail, suspended the sentence, fined him more than $2,100 and ordered that he pay $2,750 in restitution. Hoyt was also placed on supervised probation for four years, ordered to serve 32 hours of community service and had his hunting privileges revoked.

He has made contracts with society, he is not a freeman. Until he renounces his citizenship and cancels all the other contracts he's made, he won't be.

It seems I missed the point of the story. The legal aspect along with attempts to bring the notion of a freeman into the discussion never crossed my mind.

Am I the only one who sees this story as a glistening example of hypocrisy on parade? There are a few things I find as disgusting. But, that is just me. Carry on.

Yes, a great amount of hypocrisy.
The freeman comment was made as a way of jabbing/poking some of us who know and respect the laws of nature vs. silly people who either don't know or don't care about them.
The simple fact he was supposedly a hunter, and left two carcasses to rot, ended that discussion for me.
Many have no respect or idea of unwritten, ancient universal laws, they only know the man made ones.
You eat what you kill. if it is hunting that is. Only a mortal enemy would be left to rot.
Real men have no need for made made laws because they already know right from wrong.
When you think about it down deep, laws are only for the lawless. When you keep the Law, you automatically have no need for it, to paraphrase Paul.

It is written....

1 Timothy 1:9-10
King James Version (KJV)
9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

I agree. After following the thread on freeman, I saw no evidence a freeman would take an animal or in this case kill multiple elk with no intention of eating the meat, instead, purposefully leaving it to rot.

It seems a stretch to make a comparison between this 'environmentalist' and a freeman. My guess is we will see many such feeble attempts in the future.

LOL, you all sure haven't seen what even the most ignorant freeman can do. It's a far different world than how your text book definition of a freeman behaves. For your piece of mind, Mr Hoyt, couldn't even be classified as a poacher. He's a criminal. And he acted a little to freely!
