Johnson & Johnson to pay 2.2 billion
The 8th largest pharma company has decided to settle.
http://www.latimes.com/science/scien...#axzz2kMnqoDNv
<snip>The Justice Department says Monday's agreement, which has been years in the making, is of the largest healthcare fraud settlements in U.S. history, with criminal fines totalling $485 million and civil and administrative penalties totalling $1.72 billion. Some of that penalty will go to states, which have joined the suit on the argument that the company's improper marketing defrauded those states of funds intended to insure care for the poor and disabled.

And no word about the patients who suffered because of this medication.

Not all drugs are bad. But this particular one was never FDA approved for the uses for which it was prescribed and caused problems for many people who were duped into taking it.

Let's make it a win-win for everyone: 2.2B payable in 50 cent Tylenol coupons!

There were 3 different drugs and doctors were scripting them to people they would not help AT ALL.
The drug company knew it, the doctors knew it. They fed these drugs to little kids and old people.
They did it even though they knew it wouldnt benefit the patients.
The doctors got kickbacks. In several states. It took years to prove it.
But finally J&J is settling and paying 2.2 billion dollars.
Is that a slap on the wrist?
How much profit did they make?
In this time of "OMG, healthcare costs" I just thought it ws good to mention this story.
I have a relative by marriage who is a manager in a branch of the Johnson Bank.
They have their own bank, you know. With branches all over the world.
But yeah, drugs are really expensive.

So the govt and the lawyers get the money; I didn't see in the article where the patients who were given the drugs off label would get zip???

Why not pay the patients? I suppose, as a starter, the patients where the ones who chose to take the drug. Secondly, it isn't made clear, at least in the case of all three drugs, that the patients did not know of the ill side effects. On of of the three, it does make it clear that the drug company buried the truth, however. Thirdly, doctors where involved, and the article doesn't try to keep the blood off their hands.
What I hope this story does is open some eyes as to how the US medical system is run. The opening paragraph is the norm, not the exception. Any pharmaceutical reps want to jump in here and set the record straight? We don't have a system where well-trained doctors troubleshoot and diagnose conditions and prescribe a course of treatment. Rather, we have a system where well-indoctrinated doctors prescribe a familiar drug for a familiar symptom and "wait for the morning call".
What I suspect this story is really all about, is that J&J tried to cut-out the mob (FDA) on a secondary approval that may or may not have happened, and got their knee caps re-arranged.

As for the patients, they didn't really choose to take those drugs. They were prescribed by doctors who were entrusted with the mental health of their patients. And no, not all of the side effects were listed in the literature. If the patients were hospitalized at the time the medication was started the patients had NO choice as to if they would take the drugs or not.

A quick google search pulled up a whole bunch of law firms claiming expertise in filing lawsuits regarding these drugs. Free enterprise advocates can now applaud.

A really bad week for Johnson & Johnson. It was on GMA this morning, they made another $4billion settlement for a hip replacement device.

No matter. They always come out on top and if they don't this time they just have the law changed for the next time they cheat and hurt people.

What about the patients? My son was on Risperdal for a short time when he was a child and it almost killed him. A certain hot place will freeze over before he sees a cent though.
