I posted this video on FB and almost instantly received a vile pm about being a sexist pig .
Hey! Little Girl
Comb your hair, fix your makeup
Soon he will open the door
Don't think because there's a ring on your finger
You needn't try anymore
For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
I'm warning you...
Day after day
There are girls at the office
And men will always be men
Don't send him off with your hair still in curlers
You may not see him again
For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
He's almost here...
Hey! Little girl
Better wear something pretty
Something you'd wear to go to the city and
Dim all the lights, pour the wine, start the music
Time to get ready for love
Time to get ready
Time to get ready for love
Hey Mr man take a shower shave your face Go find a job or your out of this place
Soon she will hop in the car
Don't think because there's a ring on your finger
You needn't try anymore
For husbands should be providers too
Open the door the moment she comes home to you
I'm warning you
Day after day
There are men at the grocery
And pigs will always be pigs
Don't send her off with that stain on your T shirt
You may not see her again
For husbands should always be providers too
Open the door the moment she comes home to you
She's almost here...
Hey! Mr Man
Better wear something handsome
Something you'd wear to go to the city and
Fill out applications, inquire within , read the want ads
Time to get ready for love
Time to get ready
Time to get ready for love
The threat of infidelity is what ruins the song lol.
Well, it's not PC for the day, but I don't have a problem with it. I suspect that even though most men might not say these things out loud for fear of being bashed, that deep down, they would agree with everything he sang about in his song. And for the most part, it's just good advice for either a man or a woman, really.
Married almost 15years to the same man and I still love to dress up for him! He thinks I'm beautiful even with my frumpy morning hair and funky morning breath. But I love to see his eyes light up when I'm all dolled up 'cause he knows it's just for him.
Women already have power over men, so why not take it "up a notch" and profess mock outrage and more attempted control - over a fun, meaningless innocent song - from 50 years ago.

Im going to borrow this if I may , as I have another dis-satisfied member of the buddy list .
It's a fifty year old song. I always liked the tune. I do have to admit that this is the first time I really looked at the words. It was a different time and things were very different.
Considering the horrible words that are reported to be in rap. I will take a song by Jack Jones over rap any time!!
Whenever someone gets offended by something as innocuous as a song or just opening a door, I'm often reminded of what Johnny Carson said years ago about someone censoring his jokes "some people can find something dirty about the crotch of a tree".
Personally I think the lyrics seem to blame a wife for not dressing up and putting on makeup and being perfect for the idea that the husband might cheat or leave her for "women at the office".
I don't think any husband should love his wife for her makeup or that she has perfectly coiffed hair. It's a shallow thing to say, as if the wife should love her husband less because he comes into the house dirty after working in the field, or looking less that perfect after a long day at work in the oilfield.
I do think that all wives and husbands should continue to appreciate and work at the marriage. Husbands should appreciate the clean house and dinner if their wives are Stay-at-home wives/mothers, and wives should appreciate the hours the husband works to bring home the paycheck. OR vice versa in the case of a working woman and her stay-at-home husband... or whatever the domestic partnership is made of.
Not taking someone for granted is a good thing. Insinuating that unless you present a perfect exterior and plaster the smile on your painted lips equals your husband running off with someone else, not as much.
If someone released that song today, it would be considered sexist and demeaning to women and there would be an uproar. It's a product of its time and quite dated. Hey, wait a minute, I was wrong. If somebody rapped that song today, there wouldn't be any uproar, now would there??
The underlying message is a good one, don't take your spouse for granted. But the examples chosen to convey the message are questionable. If it's OK for the husband to have an affair with the hot young secretary because the housewife doesn't take care with her appearance, then I guess it's just as OK for the housewife to have an affair with the hot, young appliance repair man because the husband let himself get fat and went bald??????

I dont recall any part of the song that said it was OK for either party to be having affairs.... only that the potential does exist and one way to help prevent such a thing is to take care of ones business as best they can. I personally dont see anything wrong with making oneself presentable to their spouse, and making the spouse feel loved and wanted. To me the song is just very good advise. Advise that I pay attention to myself. I always try to have the house in order and a decent supper on the table when Yvonne gets in from work, and I also plan my day so that I have just had a shower and am cleaned up when she arrives. I still maintain my full thick head of hair, and do my best to keep those excess pounds from creeping up on me. I do my best to make her the center of attention, listening to her woes about her day spent out in the real world, and it may sound a bit corny, but I still bring her flowers "just because". I am all too well aware that there are plenty of men out there all too willing to pounce if given the opportunity. I see no reason to give them an edge.

It's not really a harmless song, it was produced with the intent of it having hidden messages, being a warning to married couples at a time in history when divorces for trivial reasons were becoming a rampant 'fad' across the nation. Casual sex, swinging and adultry were becoming the 'in thing' and couples were getting divorced left, right and center. I remember the era very well and how many previously solid families were destroyed through casual adultry and divorce.
It was written by Burt Bacharach and there were other versions of it and several other artists (including Jack Jones) who used it as a theme song for plays and movies about the dangers of adultry. Dionne Warwick produced and sang a version of it for the original movie called The First Wives Club, which plot was all about middle aged women who had been divorced by their wealthy adulterous husbands in favour of their mistresses who were younger, more beautiful 'trophy' women.
The whole idea behind the lyrics in the song was that married stay-at-home women of the era had better stay on their toes and use all their feminine wiles if they wanted to keep their husbands who were easy prey to younger and more unscrupulous single women entering the work force.
It was only a matter of time before we figured out who to blame, in this case, Burt Bacharach.
I don't think Bacharach can be blamed for anything. He was simply doing the job that he was paid to do, which was to produce music for the hollywood movie industry and for Broadway plays. He was commissioned to write a song for a movie called Wives and Lovers, which is also the name of that song. Wives and Lovers was about adultry and alcoholism, but fortunately it had a happy ending. Bacharach produced tons of music for a lot of movies and plays at that time as well as composing the lyrics for tunes that other artists created. He produced what he was asked to produce and was very talented and popular.
