Batten down the hatches folks . . .think we're in for an early &
hard winter! Why you might ask? Simply because for the past couple
of days, the honking flocks of canadian geese have been heading
due south which is unprecedented for this time of year!
Never seen this many, leaving so early before.
(Or is this just another example of illegals crossing the northern border, rather than the southern?)
Anyone else see 'signs' of an unusual forecast in/around your area?

The barn swallows around here are starting another hatch. That is a sign that we may have a much needed later than usual frost.

The number of days with fog early in the morning in August is supposed to predict the number of snow storms in the winter/November?/March? whatever. If true, I need a new show shovel.
When the chokecherries put on lots of fruit up high, it's going to be a hard winter. We needed a ladder to pick chokecherries.

I don't think that animals know what the weather is going to be any more than humans do. They might leave early if unusually cold weather has arrived already but then we would know that too.
Probably leaving early is a sign that the weather has been bad during the summer and the birds have run out of food here. So off they go to find it somewhere else.
Doesn't mean that it's not going to be a hard winter anyway.

I'd consult the Old Farmer's Almanac, but we burned it last year during a surprise cold snap.

I'm with you.
off topic, speaking of those geese. Geez I hate 'em. hate 'em bad. They have taken over here and they won't let you do anything about it. What is the number that will turn the table?
I passed a school field today, and I swear there had to be 150 or more pecking and pooping where some poor kids might (heaven forbid) get some outdoor time .
I'd rather skate cow patties in a pasture than attempt to cross an area that is NOT supposed to have poop everywhere. At least you know what to expect in a pasture. We have sidewalks and pathways and more that are biohazards.

I was in Cleveland last week. Saw some maples in the very start of changing color and the birds in the beginning stages of flocking. I thought that was odd, though, I can't say for sure because I never lived in Cleveland.

I think we're on for a mild winter. I also think we'll have a mean hurricane next month.

I have lived in the Gulf Coast area all my life and September is when a tropical storm causes everyone to hold their breath and watch it closely for a transformation to hurricane. It seems odds favor big storms late in the season. The last August severe hurricane I recall was in the early 90's, named Andrew. Nothing scientific here, just my experiences, at least those I am able to recall. ( I don't see a hurricane happening this year )
I agree with your thoughts of a mild winter, every winter down here is mild, although I would not mind more of seasonal change with a bit more of a bite to winter.

Maybe they're homing geese for Pirate Joe to get his Trader Joe groceries back to his store in Canada?
"Unusual" forcast here in Alabama? Same as always___if we don't like the weather we just open a cold beer. By the time we go to the cooler for the next one, the weather changes.

There are sugar maples starting to change, seems to be mostly on the east side of the trees.
My cherry tree is almost bare. Don't know why they are falling this early. The burning bush is starting to change color, mostly on the inside of the bush. Maybe this is all because of the really wet, cool summer we have had. This week we will finally have mid-to-upper 80 temperatures.

This country is so big, that location matters. But I'd swear that this week looked like fall in the Blue Ridge. Foggy, damp, and cool enough for an extra blanket on the bed.
On the plus side, I didn't need to put in the window unit A/C this year for my wife.
But I'm hustling to get enough wood cut and split for a long winter I see coming......

I would truly love to see a Blue Norther come ripping through. The kind that drops the temperature from 80 degrees to 30 degrees in 3 or 4 hours. This has been an unusually cool summer for my part of the world. Just a few days over 100 degrees.
