Judge changes babies name
This has to be overturned. Have we gone so far down the rabbit hole that we will allow the govt to decide what we can name our children? I do agree that the name is odd for a child but that's not my decision to make.

That judge is up there with Roy Moore on the "huh???" scale.

A limited set of "acceptable" names is quite common in other countries.

I think the judge was wrong. Is he going to change every Latino baby who gets named Jesus, too???

The judge has a lot of nerve.
It is true that in some other countries you must give your child an approved name, it is not yet true in the U.S, or at least it shouldn't be. I hope they win on appeal.
It's unfortunate that the parents couldn't decide on a surname without taking it to court.

In Alabama you can change your name at will, as long as you are not attempting to defraud.

Acceptable speech is quite common in other countries as well, I don't live in one of those countries for a reason.

Iceland is one of those countries that control the naming process. Mainly they want the name to be pronounceable in their Icelandic language. If it can't be said then it is not accepted.

And the name isn't even close to the most unusual name I've seen in my classroom.

I hope that this Judge gets reprimanded. Her statement shows the absurdity of her 'legal logic':
"The word Messiah is a title and it's a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ," the judge said.
This judge needs to leave her personal feelings outside and stick to the facts.

Maybe the judge should just take the baby away due to abuse. Maybe I'm being sarcastic or not.

I'm reminded of the Man Stroke Woman skit I posted recently. "If it is a boy, we're going to name it 'Cra* Basket.' "Jane" if it is a girl, but we're really hoping for a boy."
I wonder if the woman's maiden name was Handel?

As much as I hate parents sticking kids with unusual names/spellings the judge was 100% wrong.

It used to be that they sold little bicycle license plates with children's names on them.
If parents named their kid something that wasn't available on one of those plates, they knew they were going off the deep end.
Now, folks can get custom printing of any name on almost anything for pretty cheap.
Yep, once again, you can pretty much blame "progress" and new technology.

The judge, although wrong, is pretty safe with her decision. Now, if they'd named the kid Mohammed -

Totally disagree with this decision.
I have to tell you I get some real winners as far as names people give kids when writing run reports. One time the mother spouted off a name so unbelievable that I had no clue as to where to begin to spell it. I asked the mother, "Can you spell that for me?" She said, "No, I can't." Hand to God, honest truth.

The parents gave away their rights when they got a marriage license, a CONTRACT between them and the state, to do something that would otherwise be illegal.
The Government should have the right to do this, since the parents are BOUND by government laws with the children!! The children belong to the State since a license is giving recognition that the Government has a say so.
