What is Big Data and why it matters....

I found this on all the ways data is collected and used- not just the government but everyone from buisness to utilities creates algorithms to get information and almost everything you do, on line and other ways, it a bit of information in that collection. Things that sound harmelss (except for a waste of money) create records that can be mined at any time for individual's information.

Things have really changed in the last 10 years.

Definitely not for the better.

On the other hand, if they're so "all knowing" why do I get an ad to check my arrest record about half the time I get on this site?

Data has value, it is everywhere and is easy to collect and store.

I remember when we paid for baby formula ($$), with a debit card and the register printed out $4 coupon, for a competing formula brand. Next trip was that brand.

It's a dog-eat-dog world and if one does not use data gathering, you bet their competitors are.

Can it be use "against us"? Maybe, but they have only been doing it for 20 years or so, so it's pointless to lose sleep over it.

Ya really. And I am not losing any sleep over it either. Getting too old for that. When I go on say Amazon it says Welcome Back and my full name is used I LOVE that, even if I had not been there for 4 years.

One of the lead stories on last night's news was about how your TV is now watching you if you subscribe to NetFlix and other things. Horrors - there's not even a little light to come on to say "I'm watching you".

Now, now, folks - we know what you're thinking....

The reason I posted this was that it was a good and fairly simple explanation of the world in which we now live.
One of the things that became really clear to me after the second Obama election was that too many people hear the spin polititians use as speech and actually stop thinking at that.
So that many simply do not see the ways in which this comforting blanket Obama weaves can be used to choke them. A bad case of sounds good so don't look too close.
This data is stored forever. Even the Library of Congress is spending money on facilities to store every Tweet ever made, calling it an important historical record. Tweets!

So what other that the proported use can be made of this data?

There is a troublesome politician the ones in power would like to go away. Well mine all the data to see if he didn't pay all his taxes 20 years ago, or check license plate locations to see if he was in a hotel in his home town to allege an affair, or did he get arrested in a drunk fight when her was 20, or did he made a stupid sounding Tweet 10 years ago etc, etc, etc.

If you are the one who has access to these records, while your opponent doesn't, you can throw enough dirt to bury your opponent. Maybe he can explain as much of it as he remembers but the simple amount of it will make him seem unsavory.
This is only one of many ways that this stuff can be abused without some rules and controls on the accumulation and access.
bowdonkey likes this.
