CNSNews.com) - According to new data released by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 19.7 million new venereal infections in the United States in 2008, bringing the total number of existing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the U.S. at that time to 110,197,000.
The 19.7 million new STIs in 2008 vastly outpaced the new jobs and college graduates created in the United States that year or any other year on record, according to government data. The competition was not close.
The STI study referenced by the CDC estimated that 50 percent of the new infections in 2008 occurred among people in the 15-to-24 age bracket. In fact, of the 19,738,800 total new STIs in the United States in 2008, 9,782,650 were among Americans in the 15-to-24 age bracket.

Yeah.. so one third of our population has STD... Wonder if they are including cold sores in this or something... 1/3rd is a pretty high number..

I hate it when I am too lazy to go read an article and then I comment on it and then get curious and decide to read it and then go..."Oh.".
Turns out they count the # of infections in a year, not the number of infected people. So 1 person can really add to the tally by ping-ponging one (or more!) 3 letter STDs with their SO.

I wonder how many parents, are still so wrapped up, in the morality play, that they cannot - or will not, teach their children, about the absolute necessity, of safe sex practices and sexual hygiene?

Have they really? Seems to me that std's and the way they are transmitted have been around for a very very long time. At least as long as toilet seats.

That is the real issue. If people would be chaste, marry once, stay faithful, and stay married, STDs wouldn't be such an issue. Basically, just keep it in your pants unless it is your mate and only your mate. And learn to get along instead of running from one "true love" to another. We need to learn to deny ourselves a little bit and honor our spouses. It's not all about "me".

Huh?
You do realize that 12 year olds, now engage in oral sex - or more, just for fun, without even much (or any) thought, as to consequences, now days?
Our children need a tad bit, more parental guidance, on STDs now than, than just beware of toilet seats.
Maybe we need to come up to speed, ourselves.
