Maybe, I am from the heart of WV coal country and Massey has always had a reputation for being unsafe. Safety is one thing that the UMW did that was right (although they did a lot that was wrong). Massey is a nonunion outfit; always has been. Hubby had a chance to work for them after he was laid off from Peabody Coal in the early 80s. He lasted one day. The union mine he worked in was bad (it was old and in pretty bad shape) but he couldn't believe the conditions at the Massey mine. They started out by opening up old mines that others had closed down because they were becoming unsafe and/or the coal was too hard to get out of the ground. Even with that, there are a lot of smaller companies (like Massey used to be) that do things right even without the union. It all depends on the management.

The one thing I don't like in the title it the words "Big Coal". It implies that all coal companies are "bad". That it not true. Accidents do happen even in the best run mines. If more miners would refuse to work for companies like that, they would go out of business.
