More greedy oil company nonsense. If the oil companies are greedy, so is every other business in this country, including Amish farmers and other Amish businesses. Don't the Amish want to make as much as they can when farming or doing business or does Haystack Calhoun refuse to plant more than 100 acres of corn because to plant more would earn him too much profit? BTW, much of those oil company profits are paid out as dividends to things like pension funds. Where do Haystack's profits go?

Oh, I don't know. The Amish buy things that are shipped in my truck, just like the rest of us do!

Amish are very profit minded.

The pies, breads and salt pork they market are done using recipes that cater to our palate [just like McDonalds does], and are not organic or healthy in any context.

Need I mention puppy-mills?

Are you sure about that? What are all those horse and buggy rigs I see clopping down the interstate?

The amish are a crock.

They were working on a house near me and they have some dude drive them over from Ohio because they aren't allowed to drive.

They were doing a story on tv about how the recreational vehicle industry is booming again and were showing this camper plant in Indiana and all these Amish men and women were running around screwing down the siding on these trailers with electric screwdrivers and nail guns.

Because their birth rates have exceeded their "range" now most of them have to work for the man like the rest of us. I don't get why they don't just keep to the spiritual part of their religion and ditch the dress and bans on modern conveniences and electricity since they are essentailly using them anyway.

Some use fuel. They adapt there farm machinery to run off a engine mounted to a cart pulled by the horses. Seems kind of pushing the limits to me.

And in my area the have a lot of small engines doing the work...
While they can't have electric or a phone in the house, they surely do in the barn, granted it is minimal but it is there and they use it.. Even when they go on vacation to Potter County they use electric and phones just like everyone else.. Oh and some one had to drive the van to get them there...

Or they run lawn mower engines to power equipment.. So they do use oil and gas products....

I've seen em running hundred horse motors on forage choppers and pulling the chopper and wagon with a team of 12 or so.
Then you have small engines running the air compressors to charge the well. Another set to cool the milk...
Aside from a small set of really strict churches most Amish do support the oil companies.

IMO, what they do is their business. Not all Christians live like I believe a Christian should, but that's between them and God. I would say the same thing for the Amish. If they chose to use or not use electricity, ect, that's their business. If they feel God has led them to dress as they do, who am I to argue? If they feel God wants them to separate themselves from modern vehicles but also believe God doesn't mind if they use them in some cases, that's between them and God. Not sure why anyone should care, since they aren't forcing their lifestyle on anyone else. Personally, I have a lot of respect for the Amish and would love to have a lifestyle closer to theirs.

Most of the Amish around here pay drivers take them whereever they want to go,so they ARE paying the oil companies...indirectly.

Last year a friend introduced me to a young Amish guy of 17. His family are neighbors of my friend.

Here I learn this kid has a secret stash up in the hayloft he keeps hidden. What do you think this is? Music? Alcohol? No, it's a Bible written in English! Forbidden, their Bibles are written in German! criminey

As much as I like Amish people I know the rules would drive a person to distraction.

Well I for one don't care what they do, I was just pointing out they're not as "eco friendly" as some think...The farm I was born and raised on is in Amish hands now and I grew up around them.. I've see the good and bad side of them. They are for the most part very nice people. But have to chuckle when people put them on a pedestal and make them out to be above human nature...

Worst thing they could do. They would be like everybody else. Their garb and ways is better than any advertising.
They read the Bible in English because the young are not fluent enough in German.

Why should they? I don't want to be like everybody else. They aren't hurting anyone and as a homesteader I wish I was as self sufficient as most of them are. As for how they dress, my Grandmother was United Pentecostal. She never cut her hair, always wore dresses, never owned a tv, ect. That was something that was important to her and her faith. Not sure why it should bother anyone else.
