Teen given shots without parents permission

MOM: Daughter vaccinated without consent
Tom Wait
Feb 22, 2012 9:34 a.m.

Sighle Kinney is fuming after her 14-year-old daughter was given four shots by the school nurse at Marcus Garvey Academy without her permission.

The daughter says she was called out of class by the school nurse back on January 30th and sent to the school's clinic, which is operated by St. John's medical.

While there she was given four vaccinations, including the one for HPV. It was the shot for HPV really touched a nerve.

Sighle was furious. She says she never gave consent for the shots to the school or St. John's - Sighle says she even signed a document indicating never to administer medical treatment to her daughter.

"I told them - if she falls, give her a Band Aid, or if she has a headache, give her an aspirin - that's it," she says"

A week after getting the shots Sighle's 14 year-old daughter came down with a rash on her arms that spread to the rest of her body.

Bottom line, Sighle says someone needs to be held accountable.

"I'm angry with everybody. You know, St. John's should have better nurses... How are you going to overlook something like this - you injected my child with medicine I never wanted her to have," she says.

A spokesperson for Detroit Public Schools issued the following statement when asked about the situation:

The staff at the clinic must maintain confidentiality with the students and the parents of the students. Detroit Public Schools staff members are not informed of any services that are provided for any students, and this policy is regularly communicated by the clinic staff to the school staff. All paperwork or parent permission slips are provided to students who are instructed by the clinic to return it directly to the nurse.

The school's principal upon learning of this concern was immediately responsive to the mother and instructed her to take her very serious concerns to St. John's, which operates the clinic.

St. John Providence Health System has also released a statement. It reads as follows:

St. John Providence Health System is aware of a situation involving a student treated at the health clinic at the Marcus Garvey Academy.

We will meet with the student's family to ensure that the issue is addressed appropriately.

Sound's like lawsuit time.

We have to swear an oath of allegience, just for our kids to get a Tylenol.

This is a wonderful policy

Hopefully they are not providing tattoos or breast implant services.

Not yet. They'll give them birth control and access to an abortion though.Back when I was in ninth grade I had to take a whole round of shots I already had without my parents consent and with me complaining I had them already. Didn't matter I belonged to the school.

Sillies.
The public schools OWN the kids.....
Yeah, you THINK you have a say.....but you don't. Once you hand them over to the institution....you lose them. ALL of them.
First their mind, then their bodies.

I hope they sue the school right into closeing it's doors. Don't need a school that thinks like this.

Our public school offers shots, but we have to sign the waiver for the kids to get them. Still, all my kids have been told (and understand) that no one at school should ever be giving them a shot, and if someone tries, they are to run screaming like a maniac to the office and insist that I be called. I know my kids well enough to think they would do it too and I know my teachers, and the nurse well enough to know that they wouldn't try it.

This school sounds like a charter or something, not private, but not a regular public school either. Sometimes the downfall of schools like that is that they are not afraid to take some liberties that a normal public school knows they can't get away with.

When I was in school they just gave shots. They didnt need permission. I got kicked out of 4th grade cause I refused to take em. Startled the school officials at 1st. Especially since I wouldnt give in. Even when they called my parents. I just wasnt in the mood that year. I still have a scar on my arm where they used a multi-shot gun on me in the 2nd grade.

I always get mad about stuff like this happening without mom and dad knowing. Grades K-5 for me were at a school that was a test school for studying the effects of Ritilan. They tried to get everyone in the school on the stuff if they needed it or not. The line at the window where they handed out the drugs was almost as long as the lunch line. My parents had a hard time with the school and teachers pushing to get me and my brother on it. They would bring in doctors all the time for check ups, hearing and visions tests, teeth cleanings, you name it. The. We were always taking tests. Lots and lots of tests.

This is what a nanny state looks like. They can medicate our kids without our permission, they can take away the lunches we provided for them and substitute it with something I consider substandard, where is it going to stop?

I think kids should have to have shots before they go to public school.

That said I think giving a kid a shot without the parents permission is a criminal act.

I had no idea any public school was giving shots. In our area, no shots are given in schools, if you have not had the required shots you get multiple reminders from the school nurse, but it is your responsibility to have your child vaccinated or get an exemption (medical or religious only.) The health dept or your doctor can give the vaccines. On the other hand, the nurse will not give my child an ibuprofen or tylenol without a note from her doctor!

I would be very unhappy to find out my child had been vaccinated in school without my consent.

Man oh man, somebody screwed up. And they need to be nailed for it.
The nurses at my kid's school wouldn't touch them without major permission. I had to take bottles of Advil and leave it for my kids in the office. The nurse would give them a couple when they needed it. (rare)
I remember school shots. They showed up, they zapped, they split. No hoopla. Not saying it was right. Just pointing out how it was so blase' then.

Yep passing the buck. It was the school that hired St. John not the parents. So it is the school fault along with St John. I see a lawsuit in the near future.

The only time when I was given a shot without anyone asking me if I wanted it was when I was in the Army. Still have a lump the size of a golf ball on my arm from the smallpox shot. At the school my youngest goes to it almost takes an act of god for them to be given meds from a perscription let along on OTC med. I do not think the school would do anything like this as many are afraid of me. I know many of the teachers there. The pledge of alligance is done every morning as well as prayers in some classes. It is a public school. I can hear big time lawsuit. If the wrong judge is put on the suit the school will win and the parents will get to pay for the school's lawyer. As it was done for the childern.

I got shots too in high school, even though I had just had them and my mother was never notified. I remember distinctly because I protested and cried like a 2 yo throwing a tantrum and then threatened to pass out and fall on the floor and sue the b***s off the principal. My mother didn't believe the school did this until 6 years later when my brother got the shots and got sick and she had to pick him up.

Fast forward to when my kids were in school, parents were notified of "shot day" and told our children would participate unless we provided proof of vaccination (which was provided each and every year when they were registered for school). I was told that record was not acceptable because it was one that I could fill out myself and dd's did have my writing on it because the doctors office refused to fill it out. I kept my kids home from school on shot days.
