Okla fails in the meth fight

I saw on the news last night the bill failed to make the cold drugs that have the meth ingredients prescription only.
I think all the ruined lives should trump a cold sufferer's inconvenience.
What can they be thinking? Must be the drug company's deep pockets.

Why should I be punished for someone elses inability to responsibly use cold medicines. Okla. already limits the amount of pseudoephedrine you can buy in a certain period.

They will find other ways to make drugs no matter what we outlaw.

Totally agree with you. TN also limits the amount of sinus/cold medicine you can buy in a certain time frame. This has not stopped the people making meth. What it has caused is a huge inconvenience & aggravation for the honest people.

I must admit to being a little fired up about this topic at this point. I had sheriff's deputies from the drug task force on my doorstep Tuesday night checking me out because I 'was buying so much sinus medicine'. Really? One box a month is 'so much'?

Their lives would be ruined anyway as they will always find a way to get the drugs they want.

As I understand it, cold sufferes were already inconvenienced enough by only being able to a limited quantity and having to show a picture ID.

I can't see the justification of added the additional expense of a doctor visit at a time when many would already be missing work without pay due to having a cold.

You don't see why we should be upset about being inconvenienced huh? You think we should be happy for the added oversight and expense, because it protects people from making the wrong choice huh?

I'd tell you what I think but it might lead to a ban from the site. So I'll just say, I think you came to the wrong place to complain that the government isn't doing enough to protect us from ourselves.

Meth comes from other sources. Don't think making cold meds prescription is much of a deterrent.

Mexican army finds 15 tons of pure methamphetamine

(AP) GUADALAJARA, Mexico — The historic seizure of 15 tons of pure methamphetamine in western Mexico, equal to half of all meth seizures worldwide in 2009, feeds growing speculation that the country could become a world platform for meth production, not just a supplier to the United States.

The sheer size of the bust announced late Wednesday in Jalisco state suggests involvement of the powerful Sinaloa cartel, a major international trafficker of cocaine and marijuana that has moved into meth production and manufacturing on an industrial scale.

Yes, this is another thing that bothers me. We ban and we ban, but other nations do not. People will always find a way to fill a void if there is money to be made. So all we've done is outsourced the production of meth to Mexico, and increased the power of the drug lords down there.

Prohibition doesn't work, it's never worked, it's never going to work.

What were they thinking to even PROPOSE passing a law like that? I agree with the others here. And make the punishment more severe for those caught cooking and selling it.

I see meth use as a self-correcting problem.

Why should I be punished? I don't use illegal drugs. I don't cook meth.

A while back I got a waterproof match box for my backpacking stuff.

Well it was one with the little checkering on the box so you can strike a match on it.

Off to the store I go to find some "strike anywhere" matches.

One store after another I can't find them. When I ask a clerk or the manager they look at me like they don't know what I'm talking about.

I go home and tell the wife I'm amazed. Not a single store had what used to be a common thing and they looked at me like I was nuts when I asked for them.

My wife who works for a gov't agency said she had gone to a workshop put on by the state police recently and apparently strike anywhere matches are somehow used in the production of crank.

I was really embarassed then and figured the stores had probably made me for a chemist

I tend to agree with you. I grew up surrounded by drugs, and I lost a lot of friends to the 'evils' of drug abuse. Yet I always figured that people make a choice and if they make the wrong one, they get what they asked for. It's sad, but we can't eliminate sad.

Many people believe that humans were given "freedom of choice" by their maker. I never read any place it was the governments job to think for us. Lets just do away with most government, we've got too much anyway. We could do away with the part that makes them think they are allowed to tell us what to do. That should save a ton of money.

Children are losing their mothers to this drug. This drug has touched almost everyone I know. Isn't there something else you could take for your cold and save countless lives?

I have been shopping all over Tucson trying to find some sudphedrine that I take for allergies, no luck. Apparently the world ran out of them cause the meth heads found a way around the pharmacy keeping them and folks having to sign for them. Makes sense to me, through out the day send in 50-100 of you closest friends to purchase sudafed and there you go. Job security for pharmacy techs and good precurser for meth is delivered right on schedule. Anything law enforcement can do criminals can do just as well if not better since they are not hampered by government rules!

Childrens mothers are going to take drugs if they want to regardless of the law. You aren't making it harder for them to get meth, you're only making it harder for me to buy cold meds.

I say again. Prohibition doesn't work, it's never worked, and it's never going to work.

Well, it seems the response is pretty much unanimous.

Our jails are filled with young people who did nothing wrong except get caught up in drugs. Is alcoholism a crime? Is nicotine addiction a crime?

Why is society punished, and our freedoms stripped, because some people can't control themselves? The "war on drugs" has been a monumental FAILURE and drugs need to be decriminalized. This will serve multiple purposes. The price of drugs will drop, so that users won't need to steal to afford it. The use and sale can be regulated and controlled, as is done with alcohol. Addicted individuals can seek help, like with alcohol. Oh, did I mention a little thing called the constitution. The ongoing "war on drugs" (which should really be called the war on america's youth) is absolutely 100% unconstitutional.

The downside...our jails would empty and the bulk of our court and penal system would be out of work.
