Interesting movie on netflix: "The Wave"

For those of you with netflix we just watched this one. Its a good watch even though its one of those with subtitles and nope... none of the big names you normally would expect from hollywood. Probably coz it wasnt a hollywood film. Its very eye opening though and really should be required watching for any high school civics or sociology class. Its supposedly based on a true story about a group of students in Germany and their teachers "experiment". I was impressed, and normally I dont do foreign films at all, and never one with subtitles.... but I am glad now that I stuck this one out and recommend it to anyone with teenagers.

Our good teacher explores the concept of autocracy with his students during "project" week. During the course of that week... both he and his students learn a lot... about themselves as well as about social interaction, principles of government, and unexpected outcomes.

It's based on the true story of a California high school teacher who did a little experiment with his students. He was teaching history and one of his students said in class that she thought the Germans must have been especially gullible to follow the Nazis, so he decided to show them how anybody can be gullible. He set up a little "group" and they treated each other differently based on whether they were inside the group or outside it. He deliberately separated some friends, putting some in the "in" group and others out of it. Within a few weeks he had students turning in their own friends and family members when they questioned if maybe they weren't getting a little too deep into the whole group thing. In the end the students recognized that they had been "good little Nazis" and maybe the Germans weren't unique.
