I know there are Squatter's Rights in at least parts of the UK, but don't know the ins/outs of those rights.
In '82 when I first moved there, IIRC, I was told to always lock my door to avoid squatters (apparently they aren't allowed to "break in") and that if the squatters were in the residence for MORE than two weeks (a fortnight ) their Rights kicked in, which made it very difficult to get them out without giving them proper notice.
I don't know what it's like today.
One step further... I believe they can also claim ownership of the home if they're still in it 10 years later, or some such. Such a weird concept from an American perspective, isn't it? We think "cops" and "shotguns"!
