The mail carriers canned good drive will be interesting

Saturday is their annual can goods drive and with the recent tornado disaster a lot of folks I know who don't normally set out canned goods are planning to.

The problem is we are due thunderstorms Saturday.

I sure feel sorry for the carriers if the folks filling the paper sacks don't take the weather into consideration and plastic bag them against the rain.

You can take them to the post office if you're concerned that it might be damaged or not picked up. Or you could even take them directly to a food pantry if you know the hours and location.

We usually donate some of those freebies that we get throughout the year from coupon use to this particular drive. Our forecast is for rain,as well. I guess we'll be taking ours to the post office directly.

I figure to just set the paper sack in a clear plastic bag anchored to my mail box so the carrier can leave it behind for me to remove when I check my mail.

A 20 cent plastic bag fits my budget better than a $3.55 gallon of gas to make a trip to the post office does.

I put a few things in a plastic bag and will have it out in the box when our guy comes around tomorrow. I try to always remember when it comes around.

In my almost 4 years of working at the po, I can honestly say that only once did we ever have anyone donate on this day. (Pretty awful actually! But not shocking for this community.)

I put some out there, but no one took it. I'll take it to the food bank myself I guess, on tuesday.

I have both taken it to the local PO ( mostly because I like to chat with the postmistress- she knows evertyhing going on.) But have also sat in the school bus shelter at the end of the road to give to the rural driver as he goes by.

You guys have quite the neat Post Office, on the next ridge over!! But the 'parking lot' can get filled up at times..

I took my donations down yesterday to the Bayside Post Office, where I have my PO Box.

Our rural carrier up here drives a smaller vehicle (not as nice as the one I have seen your rural carrier driving), so they might have a load to take back down to Arcata Post Office. That and it is a half mile out to the main County road, from my house.

Our local post office provided the plastic sacks in our mailbox earlier this week.

Ours did that last year, but not this year.
I had so much last time I had to put another plastic bag on.
But this year I didn't have much at all on hand, so I did not give anything. Maybe next time I will have more on my shelves.

I always thought it was just rural mail carriers picking up the donations. When I was hitting some rummage sales this morning (41°) I noticed where people have mailboxes on the street, they were also putting out bags of food. A good reminder to me as I forgot to do it before I left home. I usually double plastic bag it and hang it on the mail box.

I filled a 2.5 x 2' box with canned goods and dry milk. They were calling for rain so I used the box. Mail girl was thankful but did struggle to lift the box. I was the only one who put food out on my street. What a shame B/C most of the neighbors are better off than me financially. I give to all the drives in my area, plus give to the Idaho food bank 2x's a year. The Lord has blessed me with what I have so I give what I can back to the area.

You're ONLY paying $3.55/gallon for gasoline?!?!?!?!?
Guess I should think about moving back down south.......
Yesterday it was $4.17 and that's from coming down from
a high a week ago of $4.26!!!

I am a retired city carrier & always enjoyed the extra hard work on those days. It was always amazing the amount of food donated. It was also a shock to see that the poorer neighborhoods donated more than the upper class ones ! SHAME !

I saw my carrier when she delivered the mail yesterday and she said the donations here were larger than last year and most folks had put their paper sacks in plastic bags so I guess their drive was successful.

My mail carrier told me the same thing. He said my neighborhood was generous, but the 1/2 million dollar houses a few blocks away, not so much.

Maybe poor folks just know what it's like not to have, rich folks have never know or in some cases it is a distant memory.
