How much food crops are used to produce alcohol?

Alcohol causes nearly 4 percent of deaths worldwide, more than AIDS, tuberculosis or violence according to the World Health Organization.

Rising incomes have triggered more drinking in heavily populated countries in Africa and Asia, including India and South Africa, and binge drinking is a problem in many developed countries.

Wonder what the relationship is to rape and unplanned pregnancies?

Food used to produce alcohol is not wasted, after the alcohol is produced it is still edible. I can take a barrel of grapes and make a barrel of wine, referment the grapes and distill this into a great drink, then feed the tummies to the pigs. Booze adds to the food chain, it doesn't take away.

If it weren't for the barley mash a lot of the hog farmers in the area would go out of business! (or the pork would cost so much you couldn't afford to buy any).

Beer is food, and my pickup drinks a lot more alcohol than I do. I would bet human consumption is a drop in the bucket compared to ethanol fuel production.

More of "blame the object, not the person". Its up to the person if they use the alcohol or not. I grew up around alcoholics (my maternal grandfather and all but one of my maternal uncles) and I never saw a single bottle of booze jump up and pour itself down anyone's throat.
