Interestin glitch in the system (immigration related)

I've been self employed for so long, I've never had to have an employment background check done.

Until now, I need a part time job until my arm is better.

I was offered a job pending a background check, no problem... filled out the form, then got a call from the bg checking agency. They needed to confirm my SSN# as I came up blank.

Number was correct.

Talking to the lady, we finally figured out it's because I'm not naturalized yet.

Seems a green card holder issued SSN in not searchable re: criminal background checks.

Far from ideal methinks.

No TG, sorry I was confusing.

It means that my SS#, because it belongs to a resident alien (me) and not a citizen, cannot be used for a criminal background check.

ie legal immigrants can't be background checked for criminal charges easily. Seems wrong for a number of reasons..

I hope it doesn't affect my chances with this job.

Good luck with the job. May I ask where you are immigrating from?

I wonder if that's something new. I have a green card, held many jobs and even served in the US Army. ( I know they did a background check) Never any question about the SS#. Just wasn't allowed to have a security clearance in the millitary due to non citizenship. (Also from England)

I understood the part about you having the green card, just had NO idea that your # could not be checked!! WOW!
Good luck & hope you get the job!

I find that hard to believe.

If your name, DOB, and SS number are entered in a criminal system, your citizenship status should have no effect on search results

But I thought to get a resident alien card you had to go through a lot of security background checks and so on, on both sides of the pond. Shouldn't that be enough?

So maybe I would have shown up if I DID have a criminal record and only didn't show because I dont?

That's not the impression the lady gave me on the phone, but maybe it's the case.

Makes you sleep better at night knowing what a great system we have in place. I wonder how much they charge for the backround check? It's gotten to be a joke any more. There's a possiblity that all of your paperwork is sitting in a pile in a basement somewhere waiting to be entered into the system.

The only "background checks" Ive ever known of is a search for criminal history
I'm not sure what else there would be records of that would interest anyone

Right, but I came up as non existent, so I don't know if I would have shown up if I had a record or not.

Well, you could always go and commit a crime, and find out! (kidding, of course.)
