Sometimes you loose track of people

I always feel guilty when I lose track of someone, then years later hear about him and think to myself "is he still alive?" That happened to me this morning when I saw in the news that Sargent Shriver is in the hospital.

Anyway Sargent Shriver is in critical condition with something -- but they won't say what's wrong with him.

I think that most of us knew of him best as the director of the Peace Corps. The rest know him as either McGovern's running mate or Maria Shriver's father.

It seems like a lifetime ago when the activities of the Peace Corps were of national interest. I'm having real difficulty imagining the Peace Corps being of that kind of national interest today. That's a huge shift in the priorities of Americans. I'm not sure how it happened.

Don't knock it until you try it. I'll go out on a limb here and guess that you've never tried it.

NBC covered it. Brian Williams says Sargent Shriver may be nearing the end of his life, but still doesn't say what condition he's fighting.

....................I spent some time investigating the peace corps ! Went too several seminars , I told the speaker how I would be looking forward too setting up a ham Radio station with simple wire dipole antenna and teaching kids how too build their own antenna and learn international morse code ! She looked at me like I was a CIA plant trying too stir up the local rabble into over throwing their dictator ! OH NOOOOOOOOO , can't teach anything like .....THAT , the local crooked cops might think you're starting an insurrection . Don't want the local POPULAS being able too communicate with the world beyond their local village .
.....................If they send an individual into a village made up of Mudd Condos , that is the way the volunteer will live ; just like the rest of the poor slobs ! UNless the PC thinks the person has some special skill , you will have NO input as too where you will be assigned . Teaching the local folks about working too improve their standard of living is very tightly controlled and monitored by the PCore ! It's all about NOT conducting any activities that makes the local authorities Nervous and Jerky , They ARE , IN CONTROL ! , fordy

I always thought I would like to join the peace corp, but never did. I don't really know much about Sargent Shriver, but do remember his daughter, Teri. It really bothered me how her husband handled the whole situation.

Sonshine, CK is right. Wrong person. Maria Shriver is the daughter of Sargent Shriver, she is married to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California.

I have a lot of friends who did peace corp when they were younger. I think it is a great idea. Sounds like Mr. Shriver lived a long and prosperous life!

I think that the huge participation in the Peace Corps had an impact on what thsi country is today, as well as how other countries look at us. It might not have something that you wanted to fool with, but it was still important work.

Along that grain of humor, I mentioned that Sargent Shriver died to a neighbor who hadn't heard of him. He asked, "Who was that, Corporal Kirchner's tag-team partner?"

Admittedly, a wrestling team of Sargent Shriver & Corporal Kirchner has a certain ring to it.

The peace corps made America safer because less people hated this country. Too bad that we didn't put more resources into it instead of the military. I have heard talk of "soft power" coming from high ranking military leaders. That's a good sign that they can openly talk about it.
