How is your aim?

This article says the US is importing ammo from Israel because our providers can't keep up with military demand. It says our soldiers are shooting 250,000 rounds per rebel killed. That is a lot of bullets. I realize we shoot a lot of ammo qualifying, training, etc., but I have a hard time believing those numbers.

Few rounds are fired in combat, it's all practice. But then again maybe that's why military isn't allowed to carry weapons unless in combat or on firing range.

I have more of a hard time understanding why we have high unemployment yet we're buying ammo and other supplies for our military from foreign countries.

I don't believe for a second that we are down to 250k rounds per kill. The number has climbed in every conflict the USA has had since 235 years ago and last I remember we were over 400k rounds per enemy combatant left at outdoor temperature. In fact, one of the reasons we moved from the deadly 7.62x51 to the less effective 5.56 round was so that our soldiers could carry more rounds of ammo!

It used to be 4 times that amount, and I still think they are low balling.

It's due to the "spray and pray" mentality and LOTS of "cover/suppressive" fire rather than AIMED shots at a definite target

My aim is fine....but really that's a silly question to ask a girl. We sit down to pee, its the boys who you should be asking that question of!

Seriously though, I agree with all above. The military spend lots of rounds in practice, if you consider all the newbies in boot camp on up the chain and everyone who has to qualify with each weapon they carry on a regular basis, etc etc. I'd be willing to be a lot more than 250,000 rounds per kill are expended.

Quail cheat because the scare you half to death when they get up under your feet.

They know you can't hit them in the middle of a heart attack

They also changed to the 5.56 under the theory that killing an enemy combatant took one enemy off the battlefield but only injuring an enemy combatant not only took him off the battlefield but also the 2 guys it took to carry him to medical aid.

Good one, and oh so true. Almost shot myself in the foot one dark morning while walking out to a duck blind. Walked right into a covey of quail and couldn't hit a darn thing all day. Took all day to get over the jitters.

I know a man who shot off his big toe when he got excited about a few crows. He was resting the barrel on his toe when some crows flew up to him.

Our factories are already making as much as they can, and it's easier to outsource than to build more capacity

I shudder to think of the EPA and especially OSHA hoops one would have to jump through at an ammuntion factory. Other countries not burdened thusly can obviously produce their product much cheaper. To open a factory requires more catitol than keeping an existing one open. To open a factory the owner must have a reasonable expectation of making a profit. Perhaps we should get government out of the way so we can produce our own ammuntion.

The Govt can STOP imports of ammo with no new legislation
If the factories were here, they would have to pass new laws if they decided they didn't want any excess production going into the "civilian" market

Yes, it really is enough to make you accidentally shoot a lawyer!

Its taken near 9 years to catch up so the Shooters in the US could buy rounds when wanted. For the last years since twin towers, ammo factories were converted to provide primarily for the US military, so finding ammo for most guns has been very hard, Recently supply seems to have come back some, I don't know if it meets demand yet though. just my opinion, ray

I have an old book from right after WW1 that stated that 100 sharpshooters could have equaled the kills of all the machinegunners in the war.

Google ammo plant layoffs and you'll actually find ammo plants that had layed off people in the last few years.

Supply and demand, you want more money? Limit supply and increase demand.
