Castro says communism doesn't work.

.

"At age 84, after a half century of promoting world revolution, Fidel Castro is taking a fresh approach to life.

Asked by Jeffrey Goldberg, a national correspondent for The Atlantic magazine, whether Cuba's economic system was still worth exporting to other countries, Castro replied: "The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore."

He also expressed regret for advising Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev to launch a nuclear attack on the U.S. during the Cuban missile crisis. And he called on buddy Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, president of Iran, to stop denying the Holocaust.

Castro said Ahmadinejad ought to understand that the Jewish view of Israel as a nonnegotiable safe haven has a lot to do with a 2,000-year history of being reviled, persecuted and subjected to mass murder. True enough. Live and learn."

forum when we 'discuss' another "mis-speak" by the great 'O'
and some of his followers have to explain exactly what he really
meant to say to the lowly peons......apparently mis-speak on the
left is a very cultured language; not to be confused with double-speak
which most of Washington is already well adapt at.....the great unwashed
masses will simply have to relearn how to understand what the 'regressives'
are NOT trying to tell us. I've already learned that they really haven't
a clue and love jerking chains......similar to Fidel in that respect.

I've never heard anyone around here remark about the Cuban economy around here before. Maybe you could refresh my memory.

But the Cuban economic model was somewhat unique, even for a communist country. The problem in the 1950s was that a lot of Cuban revenue was being exported to overseas investors, basically turning Cuba into a slave nation. Using public funds, those businesses were taken over by Castro's government and laws were put in place to limit private investment.

At one time it was said that more than 90% of Cuban workers worked for the government, although that has relaxed to perhaps 70% today. I have to agree with what Castro says today, but I'm not so sure that the changes he made in the 1950s were a mistake. I think the mistake was to not allow the economy to evolve with the times. The result is that Cuba is making a late entry into the global marketplace.

I was trying to make the point that Castro designed his economy to solve a particular problem, but that his economic model probably outlived its usefulness. However, I'm at a loss as to what your point might be.

I don't believe that you have a coherent idea of what Cuba had or has, or even what liberals in this country want.

It's amusing. There tends to be two types in politics. The informed and educated kind (or atleast the pursuit there of), and the kind that knows just enough so they can indulge their typical human desire to complain about 'the other'.

Cuba suffered greatly when the old Soviet Union died.
