Firearm purchase from an individual

I am picking up my CCW permit on Friday, received my approval yesterday. If I choose to buy a gun from an individual rather then a gun shop, what is the process of a legal purchase and registration. I live in Michigan, and I am headed to the local gun shop on Saturday to talk to them about this, I was just hoping for some insight sooner then Saturday. Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know about Michigan, but here, you give the individual your money, he gives you the gun and you both go away happy.
No paperwork needed or required.
Some people will insist on having a dealer transfer the serial number to the new owner, but it's not required.
Your state may differ.

Lynette, you should be able to do a search on your state laws.

Here in AR, any face-to-face transaction is legal... no paperwork required.
Having said that.... only two of my firearms are registered, and one is my .38, my CCW handgun.
I registered it, because if I travel with it to other states, it may ward off unnecessary confusion.

Wow, I am thinking MI is a lot stricter then where either of you are. I have searched state laws and nothing I have found is answering my question very well, I have found similar questions and answers but nothing pertaining to person to person sales. Perhaps I will be fortunate and it will be easier then I think. It is looking more and more like I will be purchasing from an individual.

You may not be finding anything because maybe... just maybe... handguns must be purchased from an FFL.

In your search, just remember that laws regarding handguns are usually different than for rifles, etc.

Call where you took the class. The teacher will be able to tell you.

Here in AZ we can 'concealed carry' without a license now.

No, it is legal to sell person to person, that much I have established, I just can't find any black and white this is how it has to be done, "rule book" so to speak. Gun ownership is not something I take lightly and I want to be absolutely sure I am doing everything by the book.

If it's a handgun you have to go to a police station and get a permit to purchase, I believe...and then it must be registered within a certain period after that.

I can't vouch for 'todays' laws in Michigan........since

haven't had a need to ......but 30+ years ago, had an opportunity to buy a number
of handguns off an individual. He was a PI and a client of his had "bartered" his fee in lieu of money.
I got a great deal on the sale because of volume and was later able to sell most of them
to other cops, for enough extra, that essentially, got a couple of the weapons for free.
The only 'problem' for most people, would be whether they were buying 'hot' items.
I would recommend that BEFORE any money changes hands, that you have a
local law enforcement agency in the area, check the serial numbers of any prospective
gun that you are interested in. If the individual balks in allowing this......move on.....
chances are it's hot. Better to have the gun seized then and there, rather than later and
risk not only being out the money, but facing charges of possession of stolen property as well!

Provide the seller with your drivers liscense number, and have the seller provide you with same + the serial number of the weapon. That way, if the weapon is stolen, you have proof of where and how you came into possession of the weapon. YMMV by the state you live in. Do not buy a handgun from a resident of another state.

Uh huh. Call ahead in advance and make sure you let them know you will be showing up at the police station in 20 minutes with 4 rifles and 3 handguns to be "checked". That should give them plenty of time to deploy a SWAT team.

Here is the law. Seems black and white

That isn't the question I need an answer to, but thanks. I need to know what steps I have to follow in order to make a legal purchase from an individual. I have my CCW permit but that won't help me much unless I were buying it from a dealer to my understanding. I think the "rules" are different for an individual sale. I am headed to the dealer on Saturday, I guess I will find out then.

some folks will not sell unless you have a purchase permit, you need to go down to the local sherrif and get that.

once you have the gun you need to go back and register it.

if you purchased with out a permit you will need to go down and do it all in one shot.

you could have the seller meet you at the sherrif's and handle it all in one shot (no pun intended) perhaps.

I called the state police for that info I'm sure your local sherrif could advise you the same.

bringing the weapons to the police station......a simple phone call would suffice.

The serial numbers can be run thru NCIC and the answer can be had in literally minutes.
