Oil leak stopped

NEW ORLEANS (July 15) -- A tightly fitted cap was successfully keeping oil from gushing into the Gulf of Mexico for the first time in three months, BP said Thursday. The victory - long awaited by weary residents along the coast - is the most significant milestone yet in BP's effort to control one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history.

This is such great news! Now begins a waiting period to see if the cap can hold the oil without blowing a new leak in the well. The cap is only a temporary fix until a final plug from the relief wells is set.

Excellent news, and the stock is up 9% for the day.

Quote:
It dipped a little at the end there, but that's a pretty steep spike. The stock closed 4% higher than it was at 3:34, thanks to the last 25 minutes of trading. At that point it was at $38.94. As I type this, it was rising further in after-hours trading, back up to $39.38 at 4:10pm, which is an increase of 9% on the day. If you bought the stock on June 25th, when it was trading for $27.02, the you're feeling pretty smug right about now, having made 46% in a couple of weeks.

That is good news but what do they mean by this statement?

Quote:
Engineers will monitor pressure readings incrementally for up to 48 hours before reopening the cap while they decide what to do.
Does that mean they have to open it after 48 hours and let some oil out in order to reduce the risk of a new leak developing?

If the pressure holds 48 hours that will show it's not leaking down in the well bore.
Then they can hook up the siphons and start recovering oil, or just leave it closed.
The pressure should be stable by then.
If they detect other leaks, they may have to reopen some valves to reduce pressure

A few WEEKS????? Have you actually been paying attention to what is really been going on down there??? I hope your post was just sarcasm.
This is NOT just a bit of oil, the entire gulf, and all it's inhabitants are in severe jeopardy.
Don't believe me? Do a bit of research, talk to some folks in the area. This is WAY worse than the government & media are letting on.

Here is just one account from a visit to some folks in Louisiana....

It's really unsettling, the videos the fisherman shows of all the crabs crawling out of the water to escape the toxic water.... how ironic: any OTHER time, that would BE PAYLOAD for him.

Not anymore. And the side affects that are already being shown are just horrible, & this is JUST the beginning.

I said most folks not me. In a few weeks they will say what leak and that is not sarcasm. Just the truth. It will be forgotten by most folks in a few weeks.

No, because Obama will singlehandedly take the credit for this. Had nothing to do with the engineers, you know. Him threatening them to hurry up really played a lo into it, since they WERE just going to let it continue to gush until they heard he was so angry he golfed over par. Then they knew, holy CARP, we'd better hurry up since we were just taking our time.

Then, Obama pulled on his scuba suit, dove down into the cold murky darkness, and put that cap on himself. Single handedly. I hear that, between the 8th and 9th hole, he had to put the suit back on to go down and take some more measurements.

That was being really facetious, but who wants to take bets on how long before he says SOMETHING to include himself in on the victory? And to you naysayers, please feel free to tell me what he actually DID short of a lot of posturing? We know how many times he turned away foreign help and allowed delays, but we don't know what he actually DID. (Stern talking had no more of a play in this then it does to counteract terrorism).

I don't think so. Too many people have had their livelihoodsand lifestyles permanently effected by this leak. The resulting damage to the shorelines and ocean environment will have an all encompassing financial and social domino effect for the entire United States. When thousands, perhaps millions, of people from near the Gulf coast have to start being relocated to your state and other states throughout the nation there will be further uproar. This debacle is not something that will soon be forgotten.

Other than a possible short term evacuation for a hurricane, that is not going to happen.

I hope you are right Bearfoot. But I don't know about that. This oil leak has put a hell of a scare into a lot of people nation wide (internationally too!) Lately I've been reading on a whole bunch of other discussions boards and noting the posts of many people along the coast who are already moving out or making arrangements to move out permanently and have no choice in the matter. They must go otherwise their lives have a very bleak outlook.

So if that's just the people that are talking about it on forums, blogs and facebook, etc. - how many other silent people are there that are not discussing on internet about their disaster plans and evacuation ? We don't know, but I'm betting it's a lot. So I'm thinking the USA may be seeing a mass exodus of people away from the Gulf over the course of the next several months to couple of years even.

I guess you are talking about the ones that moved on their own. I see them all the time. We had 2 families that moved from somewhere from Louisiana on my road in the last month. If they were moved by the government they would go to Texas or somewhere else not in our neighborhood. Most of them would go to a large city. When the folks from Katrina moved they were taken to Houston and some to Little Rock and were forgotten by most of the other people until something was written or said about them.

Or until the three years of free housing given by the govt ran out and they "suddenly" have no where else to live.
