Thinking Ahead

Many years ago, at the farm we had in MI, Dear now-departed Hubby thought it would be a good idea to raise some pastured pork, and I thought so, too. Accordingly, he located a source for weaned porkers, and set out to purchase four.

Before he left the farm, I asked him, "Are you going to put up a pigpen before you bring them home?" In his gruffest he-man voice, he assured me, "Naw! I'm just going to put them in the pasture with the sheep. They ain't gonna go anywhere."

I said, "O-o-o-o-o-oka-a-a-a-ay. I'm kinda glad I have to go to work now."

So, while I was at work, the following ensued:

Roger and his buddy, Ray, picked up the piggies, brought them home, put them in the sheep pasture, and all four IMMEDIATELY slipped thru the fence, and were GONE! They spent four hours chasing down and recapturing the runaway pork chops, and secured them in the stock trailer while they spent several more hours, BUILDING A SECURE PIG PEN!

I never did say, "I told you so!"

I told you so's are over rated. The truly wise know when to keep their mouth shut. FWIW, I was never accused of being wise.

I am only dumb when it is necessary to be that in order to get the job done. Some jobs require brawn not brains, and a mule always pulls far more than his weight!! LOL

I heard about that happening to one other guy! One pig never was caught: the porker hung around and ate whatever it found.

After a few months the man put out feed and harvested his pork with a rifle!

Nehimama: how did the pastured pork taste?

kwym Nehi! my husband did that with goats. he was always doing stupid stuff though. I don't think I said I told you so but i'll tell you when I did say it. I told him he couldn't turn the motor home around where he planned to . there just wasn't enough room. he did it anyway and backed her through the patio door. and what about the time he took the corner off the house with a large rented tiller. and the time I told him to move the chopping block away from the clothesline or he would get the ax caught. he did and it came down on his head and he ended up with stitches.I could write a book on all the stupid things he did. god I wish I had him back today! ~Georgia.

Maybe it's the paint fumes, but I read the title as Drinking Ahead, so I went out and bought a bottle of Irish Cream to go in my coffee on Christmas morning.

You could have given him an idea of what would happen, informed him of the possible consequences, then offer a warning. Seems kind of cruel to just let him walk right into that without even trying to inform and prevent.

Doesn't work here. I love DH with an unparalleled passion, but tendering any sort of farm-related advice meets with a "good enough is good enough" attitude. It never IS good enough, of course, 'specially when talking about fencing and goats in the same sentence - so we are doomed to perform the same exercise over and over. Worked about the same with the pigs fence, too. Sometimes you just have to sigh quietly and add a little something to your coffee.

Kinda funny. I ALWAYS asked wifies for their openions, and anybody else I thought knew anything about the subject. Being city girls, they always said something to the effect. HEY This is YOUR farm. I dont ask you how to run the house, you dont ask me how to run the farm. YOU Shoulda thought about that BEFORE you +++++++
OR it would be a thought they hadnt had a second before I asked

Some of us little boys grew faster than the others, at age 16 i was building homes, trapping, farming, all under the guidance of a loving well mannered, and smart as hello grandfather intent on teaching me how to be a proper man.

But i do understand what some of you are saying, and be honest the same can be said of the other sex, and some folks NEVER and I do mean NEVER get it figured out!
