Labor&Delivery: Is This Normal?
...
I am worried for my sister. This is her third child. The other two births were quick and easy compared to this one.
She has been in labor since yesterday (Wednesday) morning. The doctor broke her water, and started pitocin to help her along.
She just hasn't advanced at all.
Finally, at midnight tonight, they turned the pitocin off to give her a break ... We will resume at five this morning.
Its 245 am our time now ... Is this normal? To be progressing so slow on a third delivery? To stop and resume, like a flip of a switch, contractions? What about her broken water? Isn't there a time frame there that needs to be considered?
Something doesn't seem right ... All three of my miracles were c-sections ... This kind of delivery is fascinating and foreign to me ... But it still don't seem right at all ... I am worried for her and the baby.

It isn't common.....but it still is safe....if she has a decent OB guy..he probably has a good reason for this...I would definately "ASK" as many questions as you need to....you are family and deserve answers...I haven't done much work in L&D....except in the OR for C-sections....my nephews wife went through something similar last summer....but it was her first...and they have a healthy baby....I am assuming that she is hooked up to a fetal heart monitor....and that the baby is showing no signs of distress....since I can't sleep and it is 3:37 am our time...I will pray....please keep us posted......

Probably by the time you read this you'll be an aunt. Congrats!
Each one of my births was more difficult than the previous one. After the fourth I wasn't about to try again! With my second, I was leaking fluid for 3 days before he was born. I'm sure your sister is in safe and competent hands.

Glazed
Isn't there a nurse or aid there or a doctor even that you can ask questions to? Congrads on being an Aunt but I am confused as to why you think we are the best source for medical advice.

Every birth is different. None of mine were like the others

I didn't think y'all were the best source for medical advice.
I did, however, evidently, think y'all would be the best source for comfort and discussion.

What bothered me most about this one is that she is usually very vocal and loud ... and she had been reduced to soft moans and whimpers, clearly exhausted and in deep pain.
It was a long, restless night.
Pitocin was started back up at five after the break, and her third baby boy made his appearance at 630.
His other two brothers came into the world fast & furious at dang-near ten pounds each ... this one took his sweet sweet-time, and is less than eight pounds.
Name and picture coming soon!

Yeah !!! So glad all is well.....I didn't expect you were looking for medical advice but moral support.....these things can play in so many different ways....each is unique...

Glazed, a LOT of men offer moral support by offering advice: it is how they show they care.
Congrats on the new little nephew!!!!!!!!!!!

Last I checked I was still a woman. Glazed I understand about the comfort it just seemed like you were asking about medically what could be the matter. Babies are the BEST part about working in a hospital. I have been lucky enough several times to be on the OB floor and see them minutes after birth and I always ohhh and uhhh when I catch them in the nursery, of course now a days that is rare since they spend most of the day with mommy in their room. Our hospital always dresses them up with cute little "costumes" if the parent chooses and takes pictures.

Eight pounds is a nice size for a lad...probably 20% better than a 10 pounder for the Mom! Glad it all ended well and congratulations on the new family member.
