Summer Kitchen

Does anyone here have a summer kitchen? What a fabulous concept! I've wanted one of my own ever since I saw my friends' summer kitchen several years ago. Just think; you can get elbow deep in your canning project, then, when it's time to fix dinner, you just step back into the everyday kitchen to do so, without having to first clear up your on-going project. My friends' summer kitchen also boasts a huge, walk-in storage room/pantry where they keep all their canners, dehydrators, and all other food-preparation equipment & supplies when not in use.

I've asked my Mr. Wonderful to draw up a summer kitchen plan for my new residence, and am eagerly awaiting his input. He's a prepper, too, and will immediately recognize the value & convenience of a summer kitchen.

I can't remember how many times I've wanted to bake cookies or bread on a hot summer day, but didn't, due to my extreme aversion to heating up my whole house unnecessarily. THIS will take care of THAT!

WOWZA! That's a great page of ideas, Cindilu! I love those photos. The "rake as wineglass rack" idea really tickles my creative mind!

Thank-you, I have a rake I have saved just for that purpose. The one kitchen idea I was thinking was not on here so I must not have saved it for some reason?
My favorite picture is the summer canning one, now that is my DREAM kitchen and so easy to create in real life. '

I NEED property, lol.

Did you see the white chipped sink they are using in the canning kitchen? I have two of those that are abit bigger that I have saved and plan to use as well. Ya don't have to have expensive and new to be happy. I am thrilled with old, chipped and have memories behind them.

On the Creating a home one, I also plan on using wood slabs for the flooring, love the rich dark colors and love natural.

I don't have one, but the house I'm interested in has a perfect spot for one and it was the first thing I thought of when I did a walk through and saw the pergola area.

When I was little we had a summer kitchen, but when my Daddy and Wally built this house the summer kitchen was moved to the basement. It is very nice a cool down there even in the summer without the AC on, if I keep the de-humidifier running.

It is also convenient as my canning shelves and over stock pantry are in the basement. I have a big double kitchen sink (bigger than the one in my normal kitchen), gas range, refridge and chest freezer down there. I also have a nice big kitchen table and a little living room where I can sit and read while I am waiting on the canner and such.

The first place I looked at, had a hot tub installed outside of the house next to it with a cover over it on a concrete slab around 10 X 20. I was going to put my stove out there on a slab of itsa own, and build a picnic table in the middle around 5X 15 in the middle longways, and I have a 2 basin dairy barn stainless steel sink I was going to put out there again at the edge on its own concrete stand hooked to a hydrant.

homesteading questions at the top.sometimes they bash him cause he has alternative ideas and views about homesteading and farming.

Great idea, Nehimama. I prefer firepits and brick ovens, but that is me.

There is something so primal, satisfying, and attractive about cooking over an open fire.

I had designed an outdoor kitchen before my husband died. We had the spot picked out and had gotten so far as figuring out which rocket stove/brick bread oven/outdoor fire pit/grilling, cooking and smoking appliances we wanted to build/install, along with a free-standing deck that overlooks the vegetable garden and trout pond with built-in seating so our guests could enjoy the view, the fire and the food. Canning and chicken processing equipment were also included. Here's a picture of the outlook from where we intended to build:

You can just see a corner of the vegetable garden. Here's the big stump we intended to build the deck around:

Now, it seems silly to do for just me. It's cool enough in Oregon that canning isn't a big ordeal, even in the heat of summer. Would have been nice, though, and a really fun spot to entertain as well as do big, messy jobs outdoors.

I went by some friends' home yesterday. They have a terrific outdoor kitchen in one of their outbuildings. They like to brew beer and make cider, both jobs best done outdoors if possible -- so messy and sticky! They were in the thick of pressing bushels and bushels of apples and pears. I really admired their set-up!
