Strange New Food :-)
I love the show "Man Woman Wild"-has anyone seen it? Its on Discovery channel? I just watched the episode where they eat sea urchin...sooooooooo its not too bad...tastes like salty puree veggie of sorts :-)
I picked this guy up with my toes in the water
My neighbor Mike tossed him in the coals and split it open after cutting off pokers..

Will you be eating it again? Was there much left after you 'skinned' it? I love seafood but have never had a sea urchin!

Yes I will- it was good, not a lot there and this guy was small. But def a good survival food you can harvest by wading around-if you cant catch a fish.

I don't know Seed. I'm reminded of that scene in Alien....

And they are in the water, you have to feel around or snorkel to get them.

Could be a fun day out, snorkling and gathering food, and a good way to supliment your food bills.
Seed with your knowledge I think you might be able to get half your food from the wild.
In the water, or under the sand in the water?
We have clams here but I have to swim down about 15 feet to get them. having enough air to dig them out and come back to the surface is hard.

The are crawling the sandy bottom so easy to harvest, and there is always fish & clams..I am more interested lately in learning to survive just on whats available somewhere as opposed to homestead situations..

it seems easier to forage, and it is free. Well, where you are is ideal, because you can have a garden at home, and you can fish, forage, and hunt in the waters and nature around you.

Having lived on the Gulf and stayed many times in FL, you can walk out 10 feet from your house and find food. They say N.FL is a paradise for homesteaders if you can stand the heat. The Gulf and SC Lowcountry is a place you should visit sometime, CB.

I was down in Jacksonville Florida and it was nice there.
I was friendly with a woman from south america and she told me that all she had to do was go in her yard and pick mango and other fruits.

I have never tried it but have seen it cracked open and eaten fresh on many shows on the Food Network.
What you eat of the sea urchin is actually the gonads, the organs that produce either the milt in the male or the roe in the female, but these organs are also called the "roe" so it can get very confusing. Uni is the Japanese name for the roe, and you can find it in some of the finer sushi bars. But I don't like sushi or sashimi that much. Reminds me of fish bait too much! lol

Oh, another state you might like is southern Louisiana. I am trying to think of areas that aren't that developed.
