computer virus, BAD

Hi all, I visited my normal website that i go to everyday. My anti-virus alarm went off and said it caught a virus (root kit). No need to do anything more it said. Then my computer restarted and booted to a black screen. Luckly i had a nother hardrive ready to plug in with all my adresses and fovorites already in it. All my pictures were saved to another hardrive that i had in the computer, so nothing was really lost. Im glad i did all this. But what happened here and what kind of virus would do this?? Tom

It's possible that your problem is not related to the virus warning.

I suppose it could be something else but it seems that when this all happened with in 7 seconds that it would be the culprit.
