dropping the Internet connection

Hi,

I am having a problem with my computer dropping the Internet connection when I go from one web page to another. This does not happen every time nor does it happen with the same web pages all the time.

A little history-- I had a hard drive crash in July and replaced the tower with a used (refurbished)tower that I got from our local computer repair guy. This problem did not happen before the crash.

I have Windows XP and the problem happens both with Internet Explorer and Firefox. I did the cookie clean up and defrag.

Is there something I can do to cure this problem?

It ok to talk to me like a simpleton as I am very computer illiterate.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Doug

You don't mention what kind of Internet connection you have or if you are using a router of any kind.

Try shutting all of your equipment down. Unplug the modem from the wall outlet and do the same if you are using a router. Wait 60 seconds, then plug the modem back in. Wait until you see it has established a connection, then plug the router back in. Once it indicates it has connected with the modem, turn on your computer.

See if that helps.

Thanks Lynn,

I'll give that a try.

mine just started doing that this evening. modem online light is lit, network connection says it is good to go, but nothing happens when i launch the browsers. i reboot the modem and the online light disappears. repairing the connection at this point has been hit or miss. restarting the computer is hit or miss. i can't put my finger on the issue. i was thinking hardware issues, but everything else works fine. possible the network card, but the device manager says it is functioning properly. i suppose that leaves a recent windows update...perhaps another will happen in a week or so and things will revert to normal, lol.
