Paypal

Just got last month's debit card billing, and I sold off a CB radio. The buyer paid for the item but I was expecting the payment to transfer to my account, which it doesn't appear to have done. Did I get screwed, or do I have to mess around with paypal to get the money into my account?

You have to go to Paypal's site and request that the funds be transfered to your account.

I forget exactly what the procedure is but it is easy to do. Somewhere in there, there is a "transfer funds" button or tab to click on to request the transfer.

If you don't have a PayPal account, PayPal will accept funds in the name of your email address anyway. That's how I got my first PayPal account.

I was selling some stuff with a partner years ago. After one of the sales I got an email from the buyer telling me that he had paid me through PayPal. I emailed the buyer back and told him that I didn't accept PayPal, and that I didn't even have a PayPal account. The buyer threatened to turn me in to eBay & PayPal as a fraud if I didn't honor his payment.

I was somewhat confused, but I called PayPal anyway. PayPal confirmed that the payment had been accepted. The PayPal agent told me that the buyer was right, and that if I didn't join PayPal to honor his payment that I could get in a lot of trouble with eBay & PayPal.

While I have done really well with PayPal over the years, I have to admit that I didn't like doing business with a company under a threat. I would have preferred to have arrived at that decision on my own.

To address your question directly, if you do not have a PayPal debit card then you will need to transfer the funds to your bank account. That's free, but it takes about three days. Login to your PayPal account to request the transfer.

Yeah, I think I figured it out; under withdrawls there's a transfer to bank account and a place to put the #. It should work.

WOW. There have been lots of horror stories about PayPal pretty much from when they started, but I hadn't heard this one before. I have a bunch of stuff I want to list on Ebay soon, and I think I'll run the payments through my business's merchant account instead of accepting PayPal. Unfortunately most people don't have an option like that, and PayPal knows it and will take advantage of it at every opportunity. They're not above doing whatever it takes, ethical or not, to get market share, or get more money from customers, or hang onto customers' money for longer than they have a right to. Probably the most common horror story among Ebay sellers is PayPal freezing their account for 6 months, with a lot of money in it, without giving a legitimate reason, or any reason at all. Most sellers can't afford to have hundreds or thousands of dollars tied up like that, but PayPal doesn't care. When I do use them to accept payments, I get my money out of my PayPal account as fast as possible just to minimize any chance of problems. Realistically, most sellers will never have a problem with them, but no point pushing your luck.

If I buy off ebay and the seller doesn't take paypal I just don't buy. Knock on wood I've had paypal for over 10 years and bought lots through them and never had a problem.

Well, if you're a buyer, not a seller, then you don't have any money at risk like a seller does.

When I buy on Ebay, whenever there's a choice, I buy from sellers who accept credit cards directly, instead of through Paypal, just as a matter of principle. I don't want to support Paypal if I can easily avoid it.
