Oshbrg,
Sounds like you're going to have a real nice place. I agree with you 100% on these old tractors being easy to work on. Sounds like you've got a good plan.

The 8N was a real "hot" collector tractor for small spreads/hobby farms, and got to be expensive for its value on a farm. Unrestored 8Ns going for $10,000+. Now, they've come back down some, but still pricey in many areas. I was at an auction recently that had an 8N that was, to put it politely, in awful condition, and it went for $2800. I think of the old iron, there were more 8Ns built than any other model. (something like 524,000).

Heck, guys love to argue about which tractor is best (I'm on another board where the International v. John Deere debate breaks out about once a week), which beef breed is best. It's usually pretty good natured.

Here's hoping you have fun.

Oshbrg,
The price for that tractor in Wis. is about right, About 2 years ago I bought a Ferguson to20 with a bush hog and blade for 2800. also there is some pretty good tractor salvage yards around. 1 large one that i have used is downing tractor parts, they're online and have several locations--good luck!

your deal sounds fair to me as well, should you decide to bale hay with it then opt for an old baler with a motor on the baler.... my dad baled thousands of acres of hay with a 14T JD with a 4 banger wiconsin on it [wonder where that was made]

I thought about getting back into factory farming [sort of] a year or so back... started searching the country for 130 +/- units with 4x4 and loaders.... found a dealer in Wisconsin that had good quality units of different manufacture for about $30,000.00 each and only 10 years old with about 2500 - 3500 hours on them.... so depending upon what you think is a fair market, from my standpoint your area is really a good market to find used tractors in..... at least what i was looking for at the time.....

here in central idaho, vintage tractors with noting with them go high as well ..... 8N or 9N run about $3500 bottom end with no implements, add $500 for each implement that goes with one it seems for asking price....

William
