Start saving upmoney for a new engine/car now. Drive it like a little old lady. Accelerate very slowly, and don't drive too fast, it will likely last longer that way until i tcompletely dies. Don't go on any long road trips either.

rod bearing about gone. When I start hearing that sound I shut the thing down and not start again until I've checked it out. If it's not let go untill the crank gets damaged it can be fixed with new bearings, sometimes just working from underneath without removing the engine. But if it gets bad it'll damage the crank as well. Had a tractor do that when the oil got too low, had to turn the crank and put in new bearings. Had a jeep do it when oil pickup screen got clogged up. Same fix. I do that work myself on a metal lathe. But hiring it done can be more money than an old vehicle is worth. If the problem is just starting and not too bad yet, and if it's not caused by clogged oil pickup screen, engine life can be extended by changing oil and filter and putting the heaviest oil in the engine that can be found. Like maybe strait Lucas. I used a good grade of chainsaw bar oil for sometime in an old engine once, got really stiff to crank in cold weather, but it worked.

Several above posts and replies are on the mark but also are not altogether inclusive.

If it was Rod Bearing issue the Low Oil warning lamp would come on and a loss of power would also be current.

A Lifter will make a typical tick or slight knock, depending on what people define as tick/knock. Also someone mentioned an Exhaust Manifold leak can also produce a tick.

#1 Does Low Oil Warning Light come on ? If not then it is most likely NOT Rod Bearing Failure.

#2 Is there a corresponding noticeable Loss of Power when Ticking/Knocking occurs ? Could be Exhaust manifold leak, spray on water in spray bottle at exhaust manifold to try and find leak. Next get a Length of Water Hose or Pipe and place on top of Valve cover. Put your ear next to water hose/pipe to use as a sthesiscope(spl). This will help you Tremendously to define the area of Noise. It could very well be a Lifter issue as the lifter on smaller engines are of a weak/badly engineered design. Over time they get clogged because the passage ways is very small and debris can accumulate.

#3 Does Oil come from Tail Pipe on Acceleration ? If so then is smoke white or blue ?

Take the time to use the water hose to find the area, in doing so then much more info can be used from this simple info.

Hope this helps, hang in there. Pull a Part has these engines for around $135.00 so all is not lost, just don't let some Narcisictic Mechanic use you for Reaming Practice.

No. Many times the oil pressure will stay sufficient to never cause the light to illuminate. If the bearing damage is minimal, there may not be any appreciable power loss. Many an engine runs without noticeable power loss, right up until the moment it throws the rod through the block wall.

What are you suggesting a person do with a water hose in order to diagnose a rapping/tapping sound?
