Sounds like u got it already figured out. I sharpen by hand an it took me along time to get good at. Now I sharpen chain according to how it cuts. file rakers a little when it feels like it needs them. I don't fle file same amount of strokes on each side or whatever I might nick a rock or cut into dirt a little so they don't stay uniform. The only guide I use it the wear mark on top of the chain n make sure I file the same angle as that. If its not cutting fast then I messed something up.
