As for 2wd is comparable to 4wd in snow.....and 'proper' driving technique,I dont buy it either.I can drive my 4wd dodge up an ice chute without chains,2wd trucks cant even go 10 feet, and 2 wd drive cars only sl better, they do NOT make it up.And struggle with chains, seen chained PU trucks unable to get up road.Rear is just too light.

4WD truck with BFG AT's,its like dry pavement.Well, almost, its possible to spin tires if you arent careful and put foot into it.Smooth helps a lot Im sure. And I can stop and start there without any drama at all.For which my neighbor on the downside of slope is most appreciative.
I've been all over the mountains here with no problems in my Explorer! The only issue i run into is clearance, otherwise i go where the pickups go!

AND i have to say....I lived in Temecula for a few years, so i've been in the SoCal Mountains....are you sure you know what snow is?

the new ford suvs are all independent rear and not meant for offroad use.. we have a excursion and love it.. towed 12k plus with it.. use it to pull hay trailers and tractors it has the 6.8 V10 and two wheel drive.

LOL,if I could only go where pickups go,I'd spend a LOT of time snowed in....

What can I say? In the Explorer I couldnt move in a 4 foot wide creek once one front tire lost traction....
So I wouldnt suggest you taking it offroad without a vehicle with minimum REAL 4wd
and minimum at least posi in the rear,I spend far too much time driving past them stuck up
here every winter.

Only AWD that lives here is a Subaru or Audi or RAV 4
(not sure if rav4 is real 4wd but they do drive OVER snow very well) with snow tires,
the rest....stay home or I'll be offering you a ride back to town in a real snow
vehicle.Like I do many times,every winter.

I'm guessing Julian? Do they get that much snow? Or i guess Big Bear is considered SoCal!

I've been through quite a bit with my Explorer. A creek MUCH wider than 4 feet! Lol! But to be honest, if it's something i have any doubts about, i dont do it because i always have my kids with me. Now if it's just my husband and I in the Jeep......that's a whole new story!

Much closer with the BB guess, correct Mtn range. Not as high up though.

Yeah,I couldnt get a grip with front tires on edge and it stopped me dead in my tracks! Finally made a mad dash, slammed into and over edge and on my way.Last AWD Ive driven.Except neighbors very impressive little RAV 4,that blew me away how it glided over snow, but as I said,is it real 4wd,Im not sure.

Now the Jeep, now youre talking!!!! Way OT,BIL got a totally totally rebuilt everything, and I mean EVERYTHING '89 Jeep for 3500 bucks!!

I LOVE our Jeep! We spent many a weekend in Glamis and Ocotillo in that thing. now it's my ranch Jeep. The only TRULY reliable vehicle we have around here! Lol! Good deal on the '89. If i didn't have a herd of kids, i'd drive a Wrangler!

As someone who lives in a community where Ford has a big presence, hate to break it to you, but Ford did take about 6 BILLION in aid. They called it "assistance to improve fuel economy" or some such non-sense instead of "bailout", but the net effect is the same.

Also, Ford Motor shakes down this state on a regular basis, saying it will move its factories out, unless they get HUGE subsidies. Ford is going to spend about 500 million here redoing a couple of plants, and out of that 500, the taxpayers of this state are paying well over half of it. Oh, and 10 years ago, Ford had 0ver 10,000 employees here, now they are down to under 3,000. What a joke!

Ford not take handouts? lol Sorry, that is PR that has no factual basis whatsoever.

I would go with a Suburban. Better fuel economy. I've had a lot of AWD and 4x4 vehicles and the two that stand out as being the best was my 84 AMC Eagle and a AWD Astrovan. Both would keeping pushing snow even when it was over the bumper. I remember I got my brother's Jimmy stuck in a snow bank backing up. I drove the Eagle through the snow bank and pushed the Jimmy out from behind

Did your Eagle still have the Dana axles? The 258 -6 is a great engine, did you have that? Were the axles posi by any chance, always wondered about that as many Jeeps had em and sure makes a big difference, had a 2wd DJ-5 with posi.Pretty cool for a 2wd mail truck.

The 'electronic' posi,ie,locking the spinning wheel with ABS is a terrible system, why my Jetta literally cant move on ice,slip..STOP.Not that it can move on ice with it off and road tires....nothing with road tires can move uphill on ice.I swear by posi systems. Now they have newer 4wd with full lockup from the dealer now (Is it Chevy?),pretty nice.Thats got to be a killer system.GM has super technology, saw what they have at an auto show, someday they need to start USING it in their vehicles, its world class, world beating tech.

My mechanic has one,Eagle, also built a 4WD Gremlin! Big AMC fan.

No posi, I believe the rear was an AMC model 20 the front was a Dana 30 center section I think. It did have the mighty 258. I've actually been mulling over putting in a 258 into my Chevy dump truck

I know from personal experience that Jettas are horrible winter vehicles. I hate driving anything in winter that has low-pro tires and no ground clearance. I had a little Suzuki Swift that was quite good in the snow. But then it had a lot of ground clearance and skinny tall tires. I've noticed GM has always been willing to try new stuff (Corvair, diesel engines in cars, v8 engines running on 4 cylinders) but it just doesn't seem like it works out that well for them. I think part of the problem is they rush stuff too quickly to market without properly testing it. Maybe they have changed their ways now.

Awesome! I got a few AMCs laying around the place. I plan on fixing up the one.
