I am kickin around selling my powersaw chain grinder, it was my dad-in-law's and i got it after he passed away, but i aint into doing it professional [either filing or sawing] and it does a great job, but takes up floor space, and the saw shops all get 5 bux or less from the woodcutters to file anyway...... nice $1000.00 machine though......

A friend who retired from the local sawmill as a filer bought $6000.00 of belsaw equipment for something to keep him busy a few years ago, and wanted me to buy it from him and have him teach me to do all the tricks he knew, i passed and the next year he made $80,000.00 in a town of 600 people, of course the sawmill hired him back a couple times to work vacation shifts, but he made the bulk from other sawmills who sent him the off blade or two that he could repair or sharpen..... I only had him hammer my circle saw for my mill cause he did it for $10 and lived next block over, saving me a 4 hour one way drive and 2-3 days downtime, that and he had all the tools and his anvil was better than mine.

I still sit and sharpen my knives, and my straight razor too, file my power saw by hand instead of dragging the floor grinder out of storage most of the time, though when i do i file up a dozen chains all to once before putting it back.

When i was a kid another friend taught me to shear sheep and since he did it for a living he had a sharpener set up for it and used it all the time, I got pretty good at shearing sheep, but not competitive good, just good enough not to lose any of the tough old ewes that didnt like being shorn while it was happening...... the good ole days, thought about setting up to shear professionally, trailer to pull behind the pickup and carry panels i built from lumber i had sawn to use as holing pens and shear on the trailer..... had it all worked out on paper [we used paper and not computers back in the day to design things] just never got around to putting it into action, my friend though still worked enough to pay his college tuition..... now he is a professor some where, and i never here from him.... wonder if he still has his equipment for his kids to use......

the meanderings and musings sometimes that a thread provokes!

I have the kit in the black box, Lansky sharpeners. I love mine. I've used it to sharpen my knives and even to sharpen my axe (that takes some doing). Mine has the guides to keep the correct angle so I find it quick and easy to use. You just have to use the proper angle for the tool you are sharpening..

What's a powersaw chain sharpener William? Not that I have anything like $1000 kicking around. I have a Belsaw chain saw sharpener ..... a 392? I forget but its the one before the 308; it has a reversable motor (oooo danger danger) so I can keep my edge the same on both angles.

tinknal,

I sharpen the blades for my meat grinder by lapping them. I buy a fine grit lapping paste. Using a piece of glass as the surface for the lapping paste I apply the paste and using my hands do an orbital motion and lap the both the plate and the knife individually. Somewhat slow but works great.

I have a Buck hunting knife, I can not remember the number. It is not a 110 or the 110FG it is a fixed blade and larger. This knife has a camo sheath and a rubbery type handle, a ripper type back. I sharpened it with my Lanskie and shaved my face with it, just to say I did~! It was a clean shave and no cuts! I posted this a few years ago under another subject much like this one.

this is the newer version of the one i have, Silvey saw sharpener its updated to let you switch sides with the chain as opposed to my version which the vise the chain sits on swivels around and can git yer finger if you aint keeping close attention i think.... I aint come close, while its running but ive sure looked it over while it is not plugged in!

I see they have dropped in price this one a couple years back was $1200.00 plus delivery. I just dont use enough chain any more to warrant keeping it around, and dont plan on opening up a sideline business anytime soon. Might barter it for something useful too, just aint made up my mind yet totally to get shed of it......

Don't know if you are interested, but drove down to a harbor freight store yesterday, and they had a circular saw blade sharpener there for $60. Didn't buy it, but am thinking about looking into it more-have a lot of old blades around here that need some attention...

Ive been shaving with a straight razor most of my life, cant imagine shaving with anything else anymore, it is the most amazing shave you can get, I love to pamper myself in that way. My grandfather was a barber so I not only inhertied all of his equipment but he taught me how to sharpen just about anything and sharpen it right. Its a very good skill set to have for obvious reasons and there are very few people in any given population who actually know how to do it right so it is well worth your time to learn and to practice and the only advice I can give you is to always be mindful of your ANGLES and practice as much as you can, like anything else, if you practice enough it will become second nature.

Now that's a good skill to have. While I can sharpen most anything I have, it has been by trial and error. I've ruined many an item in this process...
No one there to teach me the proper way..
