You must be young to point where 3 years seems long time. I am old enough where I regularly experience the Rip Van Winkle effect, in other words turn around and 20 years has passed in blink of an eye. I havent regularly worked on other people's stuff for over 10 years and when I do now, its as a personal favor. Any up close and personal experience with whats out there rather stopped at that point. Except for the cheapie Honda clone engine I put on my old rototiller this spring, all my personal small engine junk is well over 10 years old. One of my 3 Gravelies is circa 1954, the newest 1976. My Yazoo high wheel mower is at least from early 60s though I have modern engine, probably 90s era flat head Briggs on it replacing the original Clinton engine (not a big jump in technology). My Shindaiwa chainsaws from 90s? Couple old Sears Roper saws from early 70s. Well you get the idea.

3 years would be "some time" not a "long time"

I also say remove the muffler and/or take it apart to check if there's a screen in there. I've seem some chainsaws and weedeater that have a screen in the muffler that becomes clogged with carbon and soot and will not let the engine run at full power.
