I built a really heavy duty engine hoist years ago. I put a 454 into a 68 Firebird. Then I loaned it to what is now an ex friend. He loaned it to someone who loaned it to someone and it just got gone.
If someone wants to borrow a tool, I tell them if they can find the hoist for me, I'll loan it to them.
But there are a few people I trust enough to loan them to. Most of the time if someone ask to borrow a tool I end up helping them fix what's broke anyway.

Not often, and to one guy who is as uptight about tools as I am. He's more of a metal worker, I have more wood working stuff. We worry ourselves sick about breaking the stuff when it is on loan to us, so it's maybe once a year that it happens. Usually, we'll just get together and help each other out with projects, each of us using our own tools.

I don't feel obligated to loan tools to anyone. I am not a charity or a lending library. I will go and help folks if they need it, or let them come over and use stuff without taking it anywhere. Loaning tools is one of the quickest ways I know of to end a friendship.
