Lamb Counts-How about you?
So far we've got 3 rams and 1 ewe. I raise Gulf Coast Natives. All those boys! What a way to start the season. Getting lots of singles. Got a good bit of twins last year from some of these mama's (though I don't know which ones since the flock belonged to my friend who passed in late December-I took them on shortly before with the new ram). I've got records started on all of them now though.
How are your counts? |
My counts are waiting! LOL
Any day now and I should be counting. :) |
61 ewes, 44 rams. All done lambing. Suffolks and hamps and crosses.
|
One ewe lambed with twin ewe lambs. 6 more to go--soon All adult ewes so there should be lots of twins--and mine are shorn and have big tummies Shetlands
|
5 ewe lambs, 8 ram lambs. 1 ewe left, but she'll be late, maybe end of April; she's just starting to bag up. She bred early in CO but I think she miscarried because of the travel to VA; that's what backup rams are for!
I had a lot of singles, too. :( Oh, well! I have Black Cotswolds and East Friesian crosses; most of this year's lambs are 50/50 BC/EF crosses. |
2 rams- 2 ewe lambs. All of mine are 1st year ewes and both had twins. 1 ewe left to lamb. I have 2 registered Finnsheep and 1 FinnXCorriedale. It's the cross ewe that is trying to drive me nuts with the lambing...I thought she would be first. Hopefully this week she will come through! Then we will be free to do something for spring break.
|
13 ewe lambs 9 ram lambs out of 14 ewes.
We just started lambing the 21st of March, apparently our Ram was very efficient this year. We kept 8 replacement ewes last year, so far three of them have lambed. Our flock consists of mostly registered Dorpers a few percentage dorpers and a couple of katahdins. |
None yet, getting impatient!!!
|
5 dead. 19 living. 6 ewes, rest males. 4 or 5 more ewes to go.
|
5 boys and 4 girls. Lost 4 lambs these year. We used a new ram and I had to pull lambs at all but one birth. Not a year I want to repeat, but the sheep are done. Just two dairy goats to go.
|
2 dead rams, 7 live (3 rams and 4 ewes). One ewe left to go.
|
I've got 9 left to go. I'm hoping they all pop this coming week (except for two, they should be due in late April).
|
Five of our CVM Romeldales have lambed. The problem 3 year old got milk fever and we Caeserianed her to get two out of three ewe lambs live. A sinlg e ram lamb, two single ewe lambs and a one of each from a set of twins means five of ten lambed so far with 2 rams and 5 ewe lambs live. Everything but the first one that died are first timers, so we are very happy so far.
My sons cross bred first timers will be going starting April 25, so we begin round two in a couple of weeks. They look really nice but 31 of those will strecth us in our first lambing season!!! |
19 as of today, with two ewes left.
1 single, 8 sets of twins, 1 set of triplets, 19 alive, 1 dead (breach) 10 white, 6 black, 3 spotted 18 polled, 1 with horns 9 ewe lambs, 10 ram lambs another good year... Ewes are thinner than I would like, but all are hanging in there waiting for spring to come someday |
Correction... number six of the ten Romeldales just went with a pair of twin ewes. So nine live lambs out of six ewes with 7 ewe lambs and two rams. Could not have written that as a prescription any better!!!!
|
Congrats tomjones!
We had twins this morning an ewe and a ram. |
I'm having a hard time counting, but I think I'm at 23 live lambs out of (I think) 17 ewes. I lost two lambs, and think I still have a couple ewes that haven't lambed yet. Rams to ewes looks to be fairly close to even, although it's hard to count as they are so dang bouncy.

3 rams, 1 ewe, out of 3 ewes. 2 ewes left to lamb, hoping for that twin tradition that seems to be going on, and would like a few more ewes.
|
4 ewes that gave birth resulting in 4 ewes and 2 rams. Two of the moms were first timers and did very well. All healthy miniature babydolls!
|
Went to 8 ewes and 2rams out of seven first timers last night!!!! Gotta love 80% ewe lambs when you are trying to grow the flock!!!
|
First ewe, a FF, and we have 2 lambs this morning! :D
|
We now have 2 ewe and one ram lamb. :)
Make that 2 ewe and 2 ram lambs. :D |
We now have TRIPLETS as of yesterday! All Rams...oh my! Poor mom. We have her separated so we can get a little extra feed into her.
That's 2 ewes and 7 ram lambs from 6 ewes. 7 more ewes left. |
We've had 14 lambs out of 8 ewes so far this year, 3 ram lambs and 11 ewe lambs. It's been our year for ewe lambs! We lost a set of triplets and the ewe. We still have 2 left to lamb in two weeks. All in all, it's been a good year here. We raise Katahdins, Dorpers, and crosses.
|
8 rams and 2 ewe lambs living from 5 Ewe's. 1 additional ewe lamb that died, she was part of triplets.
Still have 1 Ewe yet to lamb. |

Triplets today, 2 ewes, 1 ram. 4 more ewes to go.... the triplets were white bfl crossed with brown Icelandic- adorable! two white with small tint of brown, one deep chocolate brown.
|
I'm Done!!!! Had a 16.9 lb boy out of a maybe 150 lb ewe.
http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/...1/IMG_9314.jpg oh and he's only 30 min old in the photo. brings my totals up to 8 lambs (4 boys and 4 girls). |
Up to 14 ewes and 16 rams so far with 20 ewes to go starting this saturday. Getting plenty of color in the little guys, have had 2 sets of triplets so far also.
|
We lambed out most of ours in Jan and Feb with the stragglers hitting the ground now. Last count I had we were around 220 lambs. As far as ewes to rams ratio, it's about 50/50. I haven't crunched the actual numbers. I think there are about 10 more ewes to lamb.
|
I recently decided to try my hand at raising and breeding sheep. I would eventually like to have a herd of 25-30.
Right now, I have 6 bottle ewe lambs. 3 are Columbia x Suffolk cross and the other 3 are rambouillet x targhee cross. I also have 2- two yr old Columbia x Suffolk cross. They were exposed to the ram nov 22 thru Jan 17. One has started bagging but the other hasn't yet. So I guess I should be expecting my first lambing birth in the next month. |
Had another ewe this morning. 4 ewes, 7 rams out of 8 ewes. 5 more to go.
|
6 rams and 4 ewes with a few to go....Finn X Coopworth....exciting times for the 4yr old.
|
6 Rams 2 ewes from 4 ewes. I was surprised that we only had 2 ewes, but since we only have room for two more adults, that works out pretty well.
The Ram turned one year old about a week before his babies were born. two ewes were first timers, with one having a single (our only lamb with any color). the other had twins. Our 3 year old had triplets. |

From 31 ewes we have:
12 singles 18 sets of twins 1 set of triplets 20 ewe lambs 31 ram lambs 3 lamb deaths: 1 at birth (head still in sac), 1 at several days old from a birth defect, 1 at nearly 3 weeks old of unknown cause 3 ewes didn't lamb |

The ewes are: 1 - Katahdin 2 - Katahdin (I was told this, and her mother looked very much like the typical Katahdin, but it looks like she has quite a lot of Barbado) 3 - Daughter of 1 with a full blooded RMPS. 4 - Daughter of 2 with the same RMPS. She had the single lamb, which is the only one with any color (solid brown with black "socks" and a white crown, and his hair seems coarser and straight. I think we'll keep him and hope his horns come in as nicely as his father's. We were thinking about trying for another lambing this year, but I think I want to get rid of the wooly traits. As you can tell, I am not too concerned with breed of the sheep. Price was THE determining factor when we bought both the ewes and the Ram. We're on a pretty small parcel, so 6 ewes and one ram will be about right for us. We'll see which ones we keep assuming we get some new ewes next year. |
Geez, can't believe it, 6 ewe lambs out of 5 ewes, zero ram lambs! Only 1 more to go, I hope they are boys as a friend wants to by some to raise for butcher. Hate to eat the girls:(
