If she was referring to meat pen, then yes, NZW, and cals are the best choice. they are consistent and easy to keep that way. It is possible to win with a colored meat breed, but much harder.

Strictly for color options, Rex and Satin have lots of color and can win at the rabbit shows.

For meat pens, there are a number of options, but judges are biased toward Calis and New Zealands. But I know that a lot of judges would like to see a nice muscular NZ Red meat pen.

For a list of meat sized rabbits please visit my webpage of meat pen notes.

Thanks for all the good info. Don't think I would ever show in the meat pen at the shows. I just wanted a colored meat type rabbit that would have a good size litter. I won't put up with a mean rabbit. It wont stay here long if it goes after my hand. All of our animals have to be safe for the grand kids.

Yeah, that Am Chin buck was a good rabbit. He was always glad to see you and he never bit anybody. We sold him or gave him away when we downsized.

Something to remember in selecting meat rabbits is consistency in the litter sizes. All the same size, not 3 meat bricks and 5 medium.

Have a good day!

yes when i had chins. they were always a much friendlier breed. glad to see you. unlike the nzwhites. crossing them together helped the personality of the crosses. but once i took them 3/4 to the nz they went back to the same personality of the nz. looked almost like pure nz but bigger when matured.

I'm partial to the Californians. I think they look good, and taste good. Mine are gentle and does have good dispositions, even with kits.

I have New Zealand Whites. They are not as sweet and sociable as my Standard Rex...but I must be lucky in that I have only had one or two that were mean. They did NOT get bred...went right into the stew pot. One can breed for personality just as one breeds for any other attribute.
