Well, I'm a complete and total idiot!
First some background: I can cook without measuring cups or spoons. I can eyeball it right down to within drops. But when it comes to inches, feet, yards and miles -- I am just not able to see it for some reason. I can't look at something and determine if it is 1/8" or 1/2"; I have to measure or it all looks the same. Strange, I know; but that's me!
As you know I've been having the problem with all the recent 12" pattern blocks not coming out 12 1/2" as they are suppose to be -- instead coming out to 12" exactly. So I was assuming that when they said 12", that's what they meant nowadays. Didn't make sense, but they've changed stranger things.
Fast forward to this swap. I cut and worked up my strips. I cut the strips and just did my first 6 1/2" block. Went to square it up -- it measures 6"!! That the???
On the other patterns there were different size pieces so it never occurred to me before; but on this one, since everything is done on this one in 2 1/2" strips with 1/4", this is IMPOSSIBLE - the math doesn't add up and I even use a 1/4" quilting foot!
Well, here's where I've been a total and complete idiot. My new Singer machine has a very wide feed dog and so my needle and pressure foot (when centered for straight stitching) is not in the correct place to make that seam 1/4". Instead it's over 1/8" from what would be the 1/4" position because the 1/4" postion would not allow the fabric to be on the entire feed dog. So my seams have actually been 3/16" wide - not 1/4". Of course, I couldn't 'see' that they were more than 1/4" (looked to me like 1/4"..LOL) and of course I had no reason to measure them since I was using the 1/4" quilting foot and knew I cut them correctly.
So I cut out more strips this morning and will get them sewn up today and proceed by moving my needle over to accommodate that huge feed dog and get my seams the right measurements. I just feel sooooo stupid! But at least the mystery is solved and I'm on my way to accurate blocks!!!

Thought this was interesting and shows how time flies. I was just over at our old Cooking & Crafts site on Lusenet before we moved to HT to look up a tutorial for someone. I just saw where we had our first quilt swap in 2002. Ten years of swapping!!!
There is still lots of good info over there if anyone wants to take a look or reminisce. I even still like that old format.

Karen, the same thing happened to me when I purchased the 1/4" quilting foot. Since I was new to this, I made a 9 patch block and measured it, and it was off by almost 1/2". So I have to remember to move the needle over 2 clicks each time I start to sew. I keep forgetting, so I posted a note on the sewing machine. Guess who made three blocks yesterday with the note in front of her nose and STILL didn't move the needle over. Yikes!

Karen 1/16th of an inch is hard to tell, and I can see how it would sneak by you.
I still need to get more reved up. But I've got some portions of them done, just not blocks yet.

I need to sew too. I did go to a new quilt shop this afternoon. It has been open for several months, but every time I pass there is never a parking space. Today a spot right next to it was open (it is on the main street of town) so I decided to check it out. I found five fabrics great for I SPY quilts and a really neat piece that should work for the cabin block swap coming up.

My goodness! FOUR exclamation marks !!!! WOW !!!!
Quoting someone from some long ago TV show ---
"What chew talkin' about?"
I hand basted 21 labels that say "Tallpines -- Wisconsin" onto 21 units of 2 blocks each.
I KNOW THEY HAVE MY NAME ON THEM !!!!
AND --- in reviewing the SWAP instructions, it would seem I am in compliance !!!!

Hello, all! Been working a lot of OT the past two weeks. Off now until next Friday. Plan to sew next week. I will get them done and mailed on time.
Are we supposed to pair them up ourselves? I somehow missed that detail. I will have to think on how I want to do that. May just be safety pins.
Karen, I understand completely. I get so mad when I forget to move the needle when using one of my machines.
Need to fix supper for the men, now. My DIL and I are going to an auction tomorrow. These blocks are probably on for Tuesday.

No, it's not you. It's me. I'm just fading away. Was at a church meeting on Saturday with around 35-40 there. After arriving back home I received two e-mails from folks saying they missed me and wondering if I was OK. <sigh> I was there, but just invisible.

No, but by pairing them you only have to do half the labels. I just put one on top the other and basted through the label and both blocks at the same time.

Sorry I've been MIA. I have been lurking. I have yet to make it to the PO, my blocks have been riding around in my truck with me for weeks! I've been so busy, and I'm running out of August too quickly. I have a vacation day tomorrow, I'm going to Putt In Bay Island for a Kip Moore concert with my best friend. This will be my first day off this month, I've only had 4 off since July 4th!!!! I will mail them before I head out for the day.
I haven't even started packing for my move and I'm suppposed to be out of my apartment by the end of the month
Take care everyone,
Heidi

I'm almost done. Only 8 more to go, but I have to cut more fabric for these last 8. I came up short and thought for sure I had cut enough.

Replied to cc's pm. Mine will go out on Tuesday, if nothing else goes wrong. Our stove blew up yesterday, seconds away from bursting into flames. Sigh............this same time 2 years ago our fridge went out. Both times just as we are leaving for CO to go visit with family.
Gotta go. Have the 3 grandkids until tomorrow and they are all hollering about something!!!

I finally actually sewed SOMETHING yesterday for the first time in over three weeks. Also helped my DIL with a pair of quilts we had on the quilt frame. We had a terrible time but they turned out well. The two of us just seemed to have a run of bad luck with everything we did this weekend.
Saturday we went to an estate auction. It was her first. We might have got an accidental purchase. LOL It was touching for me, though, to see her in action when a lady fell. She is a doctor and after observing for about a minute she stepped forward and took over. Lady ended up being fine. Just tripped and then got really nauseous and faint - probably from all the hovering people!
Quilt club tonight. Sewing that stuff and then on to these blocks tomorrow.
Glad to see everyone ELSE was so on the ball. I think I will slide in under the wire.

Well, the best laid sewing plans...
Saturday I spend with Dad most all of the day - took him to a hamfest, then to Wendy's for a late lunch, then home - then I had errands.
Sunday I was on call to babysit Zoie, from noon until about 8 - so that took the planned sewing time. But I'll take Zoie any time, any day over this - so tonight and this week I must shift into High gear.
And just a note - it was 65 this morning when I left home for the cubicle. School start weather, and today schools started, so the buses and extra parents taking kids to first day of school traffic was out and about.
Sure wish I had someone that needed some porch sitting to at least use my new porch today - it's awesome for it.

Angie, anytime your porch needs company, I'll be there. You got me excited about a porch that the local "handy guy" is going to start mine next week or so! You will have to come and check mine out.

I just wanted to be sure about the hostess block. It is also suppose to be 6 1/2" correct? We're not sending in full size blocks, right?

6.5 for all blocks is how it is set up.
