Pictures of new Coop/Aviary and Birds What do you think.
Hi, The Coop is 8Wx10Lx8H, The Avaiary is 16Wx20Lx9H, The rough cut wood ( Siding and Trim roof wood ) is from trees off of my Property
The Birds are all around 7 to 8 Months old. 1 IB Male split to White, 1 Black Shoulder Male Split to White 1 Silver Pied Male 1 Spalding Hen 1 Black Shoulder Split to Pied Hen, I did build it to keep snow out ( If you see snow in the coop ), I had a Tarp over it the other day because I didn't have the wood on the roof yet, When I took the tarp off to put the wood down some snow fell inside. I am just waiting on the metal roof to come in so I can finish it. I still have some landscaping I guess you would call it to do in the pen area and also need to finish the walk way to the coop, but the snow keeps getting in my way. I have Plexi glass cut out so I can close the windows up in the winter. I just put the birds in there today, I just got the BS Female and the Silver Pied Male today. The other three birds I had sectioned off in one of my chicken coops. which you can see in the back ground in some of the shots. http://www.backyardchickens.com/cont...350/height/700 http://www.backyardchickens.com/cont...350/height/700 http://www.backyardchickens.com/cont...350/height/700 http://www.backyardchickens.com/cont...350/height/700 http://www.backyardchickens.com/cont...350/height/700 http://www.backyardchickens.com/cont...350/height/700 http://www.backyardchickens.com/cont...350/height/700 http://www.backyardchickens.com/cont...350/height/700 http://www.backyardchickens.com/cont...350/height/700 http://www.backyardchickens.com/cont...350/height/700 |

:goodjob: beautiful birds!!! And I love your coop/aviary.Great job.I have thought about doing something similar using a pre-fab shed.May I use some of your ideas?
|
Sure you can send a check or cash, since the ideas are patented in my head. Feel free if you have any questions along the way I'll try to answer them for you, I offer free tech support in English.

Everything looks great! Your birds are attractive and should do well, especially with the outdoor aviary.
|
Very nice! I'm not trying to be snarky here but why peafowl? Other than the fact that they are beautiful birds what purpose do they serve on the homestead? Again because you can't here my tone of voice in print this may come off a bit snotty and I don't want that. I'm just curious.

Yes, they're beautiful, and everyone can benefit from a little beauty! But, if you free-range your peafowl, they are excellent at keeping vermin at bay such as mice. They can catch a mouse with ease. They also are known to kill snakes, both good and bad ones. |
Oh...I like that :)
|
Peafowl chicks at the hatchery go for $47 per chick...............straight run.And they are sold out for 2013. P.S. Joe.G The check's in the mail.:D
|
Looks like first class accomodations for them. Nice work!

I have more chicken eggs, then I know what to do with, I have turkeys also, So I figured I would get some eye candy birds, I have Pigeons also.
I am going to raise Pheasant this year to release for hunting and food purposes. I enjoy raising birds. If I get tired of Peafowl, I can also ways make the Aviary into something else, I could side it and turn it into a barn if need be. When I built it I set it up so I could easily turn into another building to house something else. |
Joe.G just cause you like 'em is a perfectly valid reason for raising them. I was just wondering if I was maybe missing out on something.
|
No Problem, They can also be a money maker, The birds sell for good money as do the fertile eggs.
|
i like your setup. i really like the living tree in the center of coop. i wonder how long it will live?
and the mess it wll cause the top of the run if it survives and grows?? but for now i like the natural looking setting you have created. is the wood a hard wood? |
I don't expect to the tree to live long, The wood used as the siding and trim is Mix of Hemlock and Pine, the Aviary is made from PT Lumber, as is the frame of the Coop, I could have gotten the framing lumber off my land also but went with PT instead.
|
good choice going with the PT for the run. a couple coats of preservative sprayed on it each yr and it will last for a long time.
|
The rough cut Hemlock and pine, can and does last 100 Years left untreated, That is the wood of choice for barns around here, I have buildings on my property from the 70's that besides color looks like the day it went up. But as far as the framing lumber, that doesn't last as long if not treated I guess somthing in the planning process affects it's ability to weather, and that is why I went PT for that, in my shop the sil plate is the only thing I used PT for but the framing lumber for that is inside and not out to the weather.
Here are some pic's of that build. http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/cou...some-pics.html |
outstanding. very impressive. i do appreciate superior craftsmanship.
