Buff Orpington's

I went to Frog Pond Farm in Bainbridge NY today to get some Peaches, Plumbs (for canning) and strawberry's and ended up leaving with a couple Buff poults :p I love chickens!!! So far my 6 Rhode Island Reds are accepting them, even the one who chases my two labs away. The Buff's seem to have a very mild personality with the other chickens.

I only have one buff, shes my fav though always the first to be there for a treat.

nandmsmom 09/02/09 05:02 PM

I love my 6 Buff Orpingtons. They are so sweet.

ladytoysdream 09/02/09 07:16 PM

I have only had my 16 buff orpingtons just over a week. They are about 10 weeks old. Very gentle birds.
I also have one pullet that is mostly orpington about 4 months old. Her name is Little Red.....I also call her the little b~tch. She is going to be one broody hen. She is laying. The other day, she had 2 big brown eggs under her, plus her own little one, and she did not want to give any of them up. She is cranky with the other hens.
Good thing, we got the new coop finished. We moved the orpingtons into it to give them some time to grow,
away from the first group. The older birds have this carport with a tarp over it, and a small coop under it.

Yep,mellow indeed.Enjoy.

I love my BO as well. They are 26weeks old--they are quiet, sweet but still not laying! LOL

kjmatson 09/02/09 09:32 PM

Thanks everyone, they are really special chickens. I had to stay in the coop tonight until everyone was settled in; my Red's weren't about to roost next to the poor little girls. I had to settle 1 dispute by putting one of the Red's on another roost so she would leave the little Buff's alone; then went inside and finished canning peaches. I think they will be fine together tomorrow. One of the Buff's (haven't thought of names yet, i want to see their personalities when they get older) is so timid and won't give back any grief to the Red's, but the other one is apparently a scrapper. LOL. She is 1/4 the size of my Red's but won't take any crap. LOL. I have to keep an eye on her, or they may hurt her.

I have three BO hens and a Roo. Best birds in the flock. I would like to get several more next year. Good layers, friendly, and nice looking birds. I want to try the lav, black, and white Orpingtons, to see if they are as good a breed. We have 34 birds of various breeds, and the Buffs by far are our favorites.

tailwagging 09/03/09 08:05 AM

I have 19. They are the ones I would keep if I have give up all but one breed.

mommagoose_99 09/03/09 09:16 AM

How could you go to Frog Pond and only get two BO's LOL I sell chicks and cucumbers to Frog Pond :)
Linda

shelljo 09/03/09 09:29 AM

I love mine too! So calm. We're looking for a Buff rooster so he can help out my 3 broody girls :) We've got 20 hens.

I like my Buffs so much better than I liked my Barred Rocks and even my RIR's. Hope the Buff rooster will be as easy going as the girls!

bgraham 09/03/09 09:41 AM

Buff O's were our first breed. I absolutely love them. They are very docile and as far as roosters go, they are the only ones I will keep. Never once has a BO rooster attacked anyone here.

Mine start laying at 20 weeks but they do not lay as well as some other breeds.

They go broody and make great mothers.

They also make great frying chickens. We butcher extra males at about 12 weeks. They dress out over 4 pounds and are delicious.

They were the last BO's LOL. Otherwise I would have left with a car load. Do you have any more BO's coming up that you will be selling to them? The owner said to me "it must be chicken day today" apparently they sold alot of chickens on Wednesday. I wonder if they were yours. They really are beautiful looking birds, definately good lineage; I have a couple RIR's that are ugly as sin LOL.

cjb 09/03/09 11:26 PM

BO's are the best! They have great personalities, lay very well and are beautiful. They are my favs out of the 4-5 different breeds that we have.

kjmatson 10/10/09 07:16 PM

I am very happy to announce that my little buff orpington is FINALLY a member of the flock. My RIR's have a big attitude problem!! I lost one little buff; she was coughing when I had bought her from Frog Pond.

Hey cjb, my little buff will let me walk out to her in the middle of the lawn and pick her up now; she is a real sweetie. I can't wait till she starts laying.

ChristieAcres 10/11/09 12:10 AM

We have 4 buff's and they are great hens! One is fearless, though :) How sweet, wish I could pick up and pet mine. They aren't into that, but sweet anyway.

LFRJ 10/11/09 12:40 AM

"Buffy" and "Buffy" were our first chickens too. (Both so ditzy they each thought they had original names!) They were perfect for we beginners, and downright loveable. We will forever be grateful that they took us around the learning curve. So sweet. I'm with tailwagging. If I were restricted to only one breed, Buffs would be my choice.

"Big Buffy" died a couple days ago. She was 4 years or so. As she was being buried, her sister, Little Buffy was the only bird of 43 that hung around and got under foot to observe the whole proceeding. I think she knew.

Of all the birds that have come and gone, Big Buffy is truly missed.

Gregg Alexander 10/11/09 08:14 AM

BO are very gentle and laid back make great sitters. I sold 30 pullets Sat morning , 12 weeks old $6.50/each. Have 3 hens sitting on eggs now , these will be straight Delaware chicks

ChristieAcres 10/11/09 09:47 AM

LFRJ, Sorry to hear about Big Buffy. I am attached to my chickens and would feel just terrible if something happened to one of them.

Gregg, thanks for that info. Next Spring, I would like to get some chicks :)

HilltopDaisy 10/11/09 02:35 PM

kjmatson, just wanted to say "Hi!", we must not live too far apart as I shop at Frog Pond, too.

I love my BO, I've actually decided that as the rest of the birds die off I will continue with just the Buff's. I have 2 of the very first hens left, they are 6 1/2 years old. I dread the day I have to bury "Beauty". She lets me pick her up, she seems to like the petting and baby talk. I worry about her.

kjmatson 10/11/09 03:47 PM

Hi HilltopDaisy. I live in Hamilton which is about an hour from Frog Pond. I could go to our local market every Saturday; and I may next year, but Frog Pond has the best prices, varieties, and they have chickens....how can I go wrong? LOL.

I know you all want to see my Buff Rooster, I call him Boyfriend. He is very sweet and cooo's at me.http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2568/...240c481a_b.jpg

He's beautiful! So are all the pretty plants he's guarding.

julieq 10/11/09 06:21 PM

This is all so great to read. We sold our bantums and have BO chicks coming next week from Murray McMurray. We just finished getting the chicken pen ready today. SO glad they're gentle birds!

ChristieAcres 10/12/09 12:34 AM

Okay, there must be a trick to getting your Buff's so tame. Mine are nice, but don't seem interested in being picked up or petted. I talk to them, feed them all kinds of good stuff, etc... The ones of you who have super tame Buff's- what did you do to encourage it?

mommagoose_99 10/12/09 02:55 AM

Hi its me, we are in Harpursville just down the road a piece from Frog POnd. I try to tame some chicks every year and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. When the chicks first arrive at a day or two stick your hand in the brooder. Which ever one approaches your hand gently lift and pet. Release after a few seconds. Repeat for longer and longer periods several times a day and offer treats once in a while. Finely chopped grass is a favorite. Soon you will have several coming to be picked up as soon as you come for a visit. I had a Delaware hen who loved to ride around on my shoulder and I have a very friendly Production Red that comes from across the yard when I call her.

That's the words of encouragement I needed this morning. I will have some "extra males" in 10 weeks.

I prefer buffs....then barred rocks....cross the two and you get a nice bird too.

Buff roos are gentle and do produce well for the table as well.

ChristieAcres 10/12/09 12:48 PM

Hi Linda! Thank you for the tips on taming my BO's. Right now, all the chickens come running the moment they see me walk out the back door (they are in a good sized chicken yard w/wire mesh fencing around it). They do crowd around me when I step in the yard, so I'll start offering them food at my feet and gradually offer them some by hand. I definitely want more BO's!
