I understand what you're saying. I just have an additional consideration that our Berkshire boar will be crossed on AGHs. So if we do like the cross, I am wondering how long before the boar would be too large to safely breed smaller females. Will just have to play it by ear.
And if this particular boar doesn't grow out of his high-pitched screeching, I'm not sure how long I can stand him! He is pretty tame, though.

I'll keep my boar as long as he is productive. He is the product of 8 years of breeding. He's a friendly guy and loves attention. His conformity is what I want. When he gets too big I guess than I'll eat him. I don't cut my Berks and we've never seen any taint....but he'll be the first "old boar" so we'll see how it goes.
In case anyone is interested, the sow that lost the litter is doing great, hopefully she'll breed soon and throw a litter in warmer weather.
