Redhog, the above sow is overweight? What part shows you the heaviness? (newbie yet to this all i suppose) Her piggy doesnt' look anything like mine but im still afraid of mine not being "perfect" for birthing.

She hasn't come out of her shed to eat at all since she gave birth. We took her some water inside the shed this morning, because you could tell she hadn't come out at all, even to her water bucket. (deep snow, no tracks) All six babes seem to be doing fine, and we couldn't find either the dead piglet nor the afterbirth today. She might have eaten both, or buried it really well in hay. Also brought her a couple of flakes of hay, as she's moved all she had to one side of the shed.

We have to do ear notches today, so we'll at least know how many boys and how many girls we have.

nice looking piglets lisa,
I would not worry to much about her moving just yet, she will stay with them nonstop for at least 2 if not 3 days, & not worry about eating or drunking during this time. uf you want to you can take her feed once a day & make sure she will drink if you give it to her, do not leave water in the area unattended. if i were you i would add alot more hay for her to use , usually the babies will burrow to stay warm & that is one way they survive, your sow is abit heavy & needs to be on a diet for alittle while to get her back in good working shape. alot of her weight will be lost during the nursing period and toward the end you will have to over feed her to keep her in good shape or she will end up getting skinny on you.
nice litter,
try to give her some time alone in the next few days & that will insure she doesnt get nervous & step on any trying to keep people away.
good luck

Hermione knows us really well, and is a sweetie. I went in yesterday to give her water, and she pushed over some of the piglets to show me. Too cute.

We did ear notches today, and checked sex. 4 girls, 2 boys, which is perfect. I owe the farm with the boar two girls, so we'll keep 2 girls and raise the boys as feeders ourself. None to sell this year, sadly.

Now I think we are in the market for an unrelated boar. We have 5 girls -- 2 sows, 3 gilts.

May I borrow a piglet please? (We traded her a cookie for a piglet, and took them inside to do the ear notching.)

Look at her this morning. Poor thing!

We bought tickets to see a show tonight, so I figure tonight's the night!

*studies this pic* lol

any chance you have a pic of her the day before? I was really curious as to how the teat area changed each day. I know your gilt had farrowed later this day or early the next so I would assume it meant this is what a gilt looks bagged up and ready?

You can follow along in that set. I'm really glad I took all those pictures! I hope they help other people too.
