Meet Cooper, my Rough Coated Dutch Shepherd
I have wanted a personal protection dog for a long time, but could not settle on the breed. Each breed I considered had some major factor that ruled that breed out for me. And then just by chance, I stumbled upon a 6 month old Rough Coated Dutch Shepherd that was being offered again when his original buyer backed out. At first, while I was really taken by the photo I saw, I kind of didn't give it much serious thought. This was a breed I never heard of....it's very rare. But the more I thought about it, the better this breed sounded. And he was within driving distance. And he had been raised as a beloved house dog, with kids. They had livestock too. The more I talked to the breeder, the more I liked her. We have a lot in common, including ethical dog breeding practices. Liking your breeder is REALLY important. So we made arrangements to go visit, and I did take a crate along just in case.
When we arrived, Cooper barked like crazy at us. He wanted nothing to do with us. After about 5 minutes of ignoring him, he nuzzled my hand and decided I was safe. Then I leashed him up and took him for a walk around the neighborhood. And we took him into the goat pasture so I could see how he interacted with the livestock and the LGD puppy. And that was it...I knew he was coming home with us.
Cooper loves my little dogs, and they like him which is amazing since they don't like ANY dogs....EVER. Roxy (my Amstaff) loves him too and she is so happy to finally have a playmate. His basic manners are great, although he needs some obedience work. We are signed up for classes in January. Cooper is going to be a wonderful dog.
