Andis "F Skip Tooth" blade ...

Does anyone use this on their long-haired (with thick undercoat) and/or "coarse" haired dogs? What has been your experience with it?

The skip tooth #7 will work great - the reason, however, that I prefer the full tooth is that you can catch a bit of skin with the gap in the skip tooth and slice a hole. If you are careful to keep it flat to the skin and not pull the hair or skin in such a way that you might nick your dog, it will generally go under most matting and leave some hair behind. Be particularly careful on the armpits, elbows and right in front of the back leg, where the skin usually makes a fold.

Generally they also leave the hair a bit longer than #7F but less smooth (you can get lines pretty easily). I've used them for rough in before the bath/dry/reclip part of the grooming. They can also ride up into the mats and leave matted hair along the skin - however this will be short and you might be able to brush it out and reclip to get your dog smooth.

They work very well for a short Poodle haircut, as the crisp curly hair doesn't leave lines in it like straighter hair.
Oregon Julie likes this.

I called Andis and told them the problem I was having with my new Andis clipper and the 3 different types of blades I had ordered. The lady in Customer Service was extremely nice and told me Andis personal should have told me I would need a "skip tooth" blade. I told her the skip-tooth I've seen leave only about 1/8 - 1/4th inch of hair and I really wanted more than that. She said she is going to send me one that will leave 1/2 inches of hair FREE! I was shocked! Seems all the good things I've heard about the Andis is true!

Nice! I've never had to deal with Andis directly, but I am happy with my Andis products and use their clippers in my grooming shop. Hopefully you are aware that your dog's hair will need to be thoroughly combed out to get a blade to cut 1/2", that size blade won't go under the mats like a shorter one. That's really good to hear about how you were treated.
