Another new hound owner here.well 1/2

I have posted occasionally about our newfoundland in reply to other threads. Last week he passed away during a surgery to fix his broken leg and dislocated knee cap. They think it was from a blood clot. He was a sweetheart and our family was/is devastated.

In our family when one dog passes on it has never taken long for another to join our family, never replaces the other but at least gives us something to focus on. We have 4 children and have always had 4 dogs, the kids spend a lot of time with their dogs so it's very noticable when 1 child is dogless.

Anyway...my friend e-mailed me an ad yesterday for a lab/walker pup a few miles from us. They live on a busy road in town and the pup was getting in the road. Instead of having him get hit they decided to re-home him to someone who had more room for him to run around. Our yard is also fenced.

He is 7 months old, housebroken and very mannerly. You can tell that they really put a lot of time into him. He was raised with kids and is a definete house baby.

Also defintely has a ton of energy. My son is really excited and his hoping to hunt with him someday.

My first step is to get him neutered!

Just thought I would post a little intro since I'm sure to end up asking lots of questions. I have never had a hound before.

I am so sorry you lost your Newfoundland. I know the hurt you are going through. Your pup sounds like a good match for your family. pics?

I have never been able to add photos here for some reason. GGRR I put it in a public place for storage, then click to insert image, then put in the web address. All I ever get is a red x.

For pictures, I use Photobucket. When you click on the picture, there are four options under it, I use the bottom one that has [img] codes on either end of it, NOT the [html] or web address. I copy that text and paste it in here. Hopefully that makes some sense?

He's really cute, looks like a nice, athletic boy and I love the name.

So sorry about your Newfie.

Thanks Granny Carol, I finally got it!

We will always miss our newfie, he was an incredible do and losing him has been so sad. He was only a year old. We decided not to get another one since everything with his surgery etc, was so much harder due to his size.

Oh, it is so hard to lose a baby like that, I don't blame you!

Glad you "got it" on the pictures, it's fun to post them.

Watch him around other critters especially cats. They have a strong desire to hunt. I have 5.

He's cute. Boy, do those hounds have energy though! Mine is like having a 2 year old around all the time.

Thanks, I didn't expect to like him so much actually. I tend to favor border collies and thought a hound cross wouldn't be very in tune to people like they are. Surprises me how much he actually pays attention to what I expect of him. He's very smart!

I already have a dog who chases my cats so they stay clear.

I don't think our family will hunt coons since you have to do it at night. I've read that he can use him to hunt squirrels, not as exciting but it would get them out with something to do.

I was surprised at how protective he is already. He doesn't miss anything, is that a normal walker thing? Do I have to be careful he doesn't get "to" protective? When my husband went to meet him he was a bit reserved for the first 30 seconds or so..then he thought they were great. Seems to be how he is with guest here too.
