Border collie to the rescue

It should be noted my border collie Paige does not "like" the cats. She tolerates them because we say so. However Paige does hate cat fights (or people play fights for that matter) Well this evening a crusty barn cat come around and picked a fight with our old fluffy cat who really isn't up to that sort of thing. When i opened the door to see what the commotion was Paige shot past me and dove into the middle of the cat fight, nose flicking the barn cat away letting the old guy escape. Paige fixed the barn cat with one of those classic crouched and ready border collie stance and stares, daring him to after the poor old cat. He didn't, the barn cat did chance a streaking run to the relative safety under the porch. All over in seconds I called Paige off and of course she's now the hero in the house. She still dislikes the cats and I'm sure old Tickles (fluffy cat) doesn't really appreciate the favour he got, but there's peace on earth here and its thanks to a border collie.

Oh yes, the Cop Collie routine.
Good dog Paige!

My BC would really like to sort the rooster out.
She tolerates him breeding the hens, but only because I say so.

She has her own definitions for misbehaviour sometimes.
She also doesnt approve of running on the stairs.

Never underestimate a brilliant dog.

My Collie puppy shows some of those sorts of ideas about how things ought to be already and she's storing up observations for future ideas. I'm looking forward to seeing how she decides she ought to run things.... hehe

If she's outside in the backyard, she will lay on the deck by the sliding glass door and observe what's going on inside and what's going on in our yard and the neighbor's yard. There's an awful lot of thinking going on in her six month old head. She's a good one, I just hope I can keep up and direct that mind out of mischief and into productive thought. She likes kitties, but really they should be poked... and has a bit of "Tigger" in her and wants to bounce things!

This is my first real herding breed, she's a lot of fun and loves a good puzzle.

This time of year, my Muscovy drakes fight - a lot. And my female Border collie thinks it's her duty to break those fights up.

She can hear them fighting from inside the house and goes nuts until I let her out. She jumps on them and pulls them apart, sometimes ending up with a mouthful of feathers, but she has never hurt one. As soon as they're apart, she walks off, wagging her tail.

A couple of weeks ago, I heard her barking outside and I went to see what she was barking at. Two drakes were down in the pond, fighting, but the gate was closed to that part of the goat pasture and she couldn't get to them. She then did something she has NEVER done in her seven years - she jumped the fence! She then jumped into the pond, swam out to the fighting drakes, broke up the fight, swam back to the shore, and then stood at the gate, barking for me to come open it because apparently she didn't have the same motivation to jump the fence back out. LOL

Border collies are awesome.

Our english shepherd mix won't allow our boys to fight - she physically gets between them and pushes them away. If I yell at the boys a bit too much for her liking she tries to get between me and them. Smart dog.

Our blue heeler doesn't approve or kids being boisterous. They get a few warning yips then she's pushing their heels with her nose. Never bitten, but lets her displeasure be known, lol.

We have always had a lot of dogs and cats - rescues. They have all lived with us until their deaths. Some have had more trouble settling in than others but there has never been a real or long term problem Probably because there is always a cat or a dog that takes on the roll of Policepet. They break up fights and even step in between to prevent them. They also get in and slap the fighters around. The dogs accept the authority of the Policecat and the cats accept the authority of the Policedog. When they pass away another will step in. The first time we saw it happen we were surprised. The cat who stepped into the job was the quietest one we had and he took over from our dog.
The policecats have never bothered with the adults who yell at each other or the kids who fight (give us a contemptuous look! and walk away) but the policedogs don't like it at all. They will push the combatants apart and bark furiously at the yellers.
