URGENT: need info on medication ASAP

Aislinn is sick. We had the vet do a parvo test and it was negative, but she tested positive for a gastrointestinal parasite. He gave her Metronidazole (250 mg) and I am to give her the first one at 4 p.m.

However, I just read that it should NOT be given to puppies under 8 months of age. Aislinn is 11 weeks old.

I do NOT want her to suffer liver damage due to medication I gave her. Is this info correct? Should I hold off giving her the Metronidazole?

I am also supposed to give her a dose of Panacur at 4. The vet gave her a shot at 1 p.m. but hubby didn't tell me what the shot was.

I would call the vet to double check; sometimes the benefit out weighs the risks, you know? If he feels she needs this, you have been to this vet with so many critters you trust him, yes? So call, double check, then go ahead and follow his direction. ALso, find out what shot she was given!!

Call the doc and ask what the shot was. It should be in the file and easy to look up.

Did the vet prescribe the meds? If you are worried, I would just call and ask them about it. Many times it's common practice to use medications in "off label" use if the vet's prescribe them, the label's are designed to save the medication company from legal trouble. Although, if you are worried about it, I would call the vet and ask.

ETA: also wanted to add, hours be darned, this *could* constitute an after hours phone call to the vet that saw her today.

The metro is to settle her tummy and stop the diarrhea. You can try feeding her a small amount of canned raw pumpkin (not pie filling). That firms up stool.
You don't have to do it exactly at 4pm...give it an hour and see what other replies come. I would still give her the Panacur at 4-m though.

Ahh, so it's not an antibiotic? I know DUke had some...errr...magnificent explosions after his GI bleed, his stomach has been so sensitive ever since. And I give him Imodium or Pepto depending on how bad it is. Both of these have child doses as well. But I agree with the above, give it, or call and make sure.

How many doses did the vet give you?

Haven't been able to get an answer when I call the vet...line is busy. The only vet available was the livestock vet...he isn't the one we usually see and he isn't that familiar with treatment of dogs and cats. I will give the Panacur now and wait until I hear from them before giving the metronidazole. Even then I think I'll give her 1/2 of a pill.

She had diarrhea yesterday, it was firmer last night, then she had a normal stool before bed. However, she didn't eat yesterday or all night. Hubby took her evening meal away and gave her some dry kibble and she threw it up so off to the vet they went.

We are just so darn paranoid about parvo that this has us pulling our hair out.

We got three doses of Panacur (6 cc each dose) one a day

10 250 mg pills of Metronidazole one a day until gone

I called our regular vet at his other hospital. He assured me that dose of metronidazole was fine. However, I could NOT hold that eight pound furry tornado to get anything in her mouth! I crushed half a pill and put it in a bit of wet food and she gobbled it up, then licked the bowl. Guess her appetite has returned!

The panacur will have to wait until hubby gets home (liquid in a syringe to squirt down her throat).

Talked to hubby on the phone (was almost in tears trying to give her the meds) and he said it took THREE people at the vet's to give her the shot. Plus, she tried to bite the vet. Three people to hold down an eight pound puppy!

She went out to potty (peed, no poop/diarrhea) and now she's in her crate mutilating her fuzzy yellow stuffed toy.

Thanks, she's currently eating her third small meal of the day...the first two she kept down with no problem. Also, she's been extremely fiesty tonight, which I take as a good sign.

Just saw this post. I know what they say about the medication but it is commonly given to pups younger then yours. I wouldn't be worried at all. Hope pup continues to feel better.

Thanks! She's doing great. Appetite is vastly improved (she's like a little bottomless pit) and the poops are back to normal. Aislinn is quite a little character and goes 90 to nothing. We are head over heels in love with her.

So do I LoneStrChic23. We're so fearful of Parvo that the first time she upchucked hubby immediately headed to the vet's with her.

That's the proper dosage for a 30 lb dog, according to everything I've ever heard.

It should be 1 ML/ 5 lbs if it's a normal 10% solution
